the publicity they crave. I know he was trying to expose the depth of their depravity, but completely ignoring them may, MAY, make them less inclined to show up at nearly every high profile funeral in the country.

6. He discussed that issue, and it was a decent piece

He discussed the concern about giving them publicity in the piece. He's right that with the Supreme Court considering their case it's appropriate to take a little look at them. The coverage was brief, dealt with strategies people can use to non-violently oppose WBC's actions, and I would say maintained the right sort of tone.

Anyway Phelps has been praying for Cooper's death and called him a "news prostitute", and it would be hard to never acknowledge that at least to laugh at it.

4. The small silver lining of giving Phelps et al televised publicity

is that there are people in this country who attend churches that promote rhetoric not terribly different from the WB's. Maybe seeing him properly demonized will get them thinking about their own position on homosexuality and other "sins."
