The U.S. Senate is holding a key test vote today on President Obama's controversial legislation that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. The bill caused an uproar when it was announced last week, but no one voiced more powerful opposition than Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT). He took to the floor of the Senate at 10:24 a.m. on Friday morning to denounce the tax-cut plan. He did not yield the floor back until 6:59 p.m., more than eight-and-a-half hours later. Democracy Now! broadcasted highlights of his address.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) wrapped up an 8 ½ hour speech, or what his office called a “tax cut filibuster” on the Senate floor opposing the White House and Republican compromise on tax cuts and unemployment benefits. He began his speech at 10:25am saying, “I am simply here today to take as long as I can to explain to the American people the fact that we have got to do a lot better than this agreement provides.”
The Senate began debate today on the measure and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has scheduled a procedural vote on Monday afternoon to move forward on the measure.

Several senators have announced their support for the deal reached by the White House and Republican leaders, while the House Democratic Caucus voted against taking up the proposed legislation unless changes are made in bill. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) voiced his thoughts in a statement saying, “The truth is, the president got a lot of things here we’ve been fighting for that we haven’t yet been able to win any other way.’’

1. You can't say this man didn't give it his all.
For 8 and 1/2 hours he said things most Americans have been feeling for at least 8 years. I looked on many sites
finding absolutely NO coverage of this. Late I heard that C-SPAN was shut down due to overwhelming viewership.
I am incredibly angry that 150 people who make less than 20 thousand a year. (the poorest of us) will have to pay
more in taxes - about 250 dollars per person per household. No one reports this at all. See DemocracyNow Tuesday
Dec. 14 show.
