TEXT:

Dear Al Gore,
I am writing to you as an alarmed citizen of what once was, and still has the potential to be, a prosperous and virtuous nation. Our United States of America is in a crisis of corporate representation. Our leaders neglect the desires and welfare of the people, continuing time and time again to approach pressing issues with an astigmatic and corrupted perspective. Profit driven lobbying overshadows political benevolence, and exposes the powerful nature of greed in man. Media consolidation enables conglomerates and tycoons to distort a disturbing reality into a propagandized fiction of tranquility. These systematic failures have lead to exploitive policies both here at home and abroad, but you know all of this, and that is why I am writing you.

I just can't take it anymore. I am sick and tired of waking up indebted to imperial occupation, to rising Co2 emmisions and environmental degradation, to CIA secret prisons, Guantanamo Bay and torture policy, to a failed healthcare system, to gratuitous and increasing income discrepancies that leave the poor helpless and the rich richer, to an entrenched military industrial congressional complex, to a dysfunctional voting system, to soaring deficits that will burden future generations, like the one that I am a member of, and to a society addicted to oil, economically and culturally - a society completely unaware of the recessionary implications of a global production peak.

Mr. Gore, I know you share the same frustrations. You were against the Iraq war from the beginning, and remain currently opposed. You have been aware of the green house effect since the late 80's, and have encouraged congress to adopt a carbon-tax, a measure that would mitigate both global warming and fossil fuel addiction. You are a past vice president and senator, and know from the inside out where the flaws lie. You have spent your years out of office working on one of the most important, and influential information campaigns of our time.

So, Mr. Gore, I believe it is your civic duty to run for president in 2008. No, actually, the stakes are much higher than this being merely a patriotic responsibility; I believe that it is your moral obligation to mankind to run for president. What you could do for this country, what you would be doing for the world, is limitless.

14. Agree or disagree: Does Gore have to be drafted to be credible?

20. Makes no difference to me
We all know how poisonous the political arena is. If he entered now, I think it would be because he felt compelled to answer to his country's need, not because he's a glory hound.

I pray every day that he will declare his candidacy.

42. That's exactly how I feel! There are precedents for drafting candidates.
But that's back in the days where the final choices were made at the party convention in those infamous "smoke-filled rooms."

24. Where to Sign
Begin at www.draftgore.com, sign our petition and add your comment if you like. The petition is now nearly 112,000 strong, and does not accept anonymous signatories or initials for surnames. We work diligently to maintain its integrity, with real signatures from real people!

There are a number of Gore groups out there -- some dedicated to putting his name on the ballot in their states. You can Google to find which type of activism best suits your available time and location.

Great job, OP. Your voice is moving.

The Current Occupant came to view the wreckage and to express, in that intense and aimless way of his, his hopes for a better life for us. And then, having raised our hopes, he did not resign from office after all. -- Garrison Keillor

4. He owes no duty to anyone to run
Funny how people keep telling him that when he is already doing more than I suspect all of us put together. Perhaps when we on the whole start talking about OUR duty and taking action on it we might see what is really possible.

16. You won't get an answer to that question. Unfortunately, the anti-Gore
for Politics campaign has a very very small following here. They forget that this is a democratic political website. You will be harassed and condemned if you support Gore for president. They are the only ones that are really making any effort towards the planet crisis, so they will tell you that you could not possibly do enough to support global warming. You will also be informed that you have no respect for a man who has said he wants to re-enter politics again someday (Only they know what he really wants and what's best for him and the rest of the country!).

Trust me, this is a case where "ignore" becomes your best friend.

18. Then you shouldn't be posting about Al Gore at all here, because the climate crisis is a MORAL issue
As he has also stated many times. And as for your last line, you should then practice what you preach. Oh, and my beef is with stating it is his "duty" to run in 2008. That's just unadulterated hogwash. He did his "duty" for thirty years and did it well, all you and others here give a damn about. And who is this "they?" I speak for myself. I don't need a posse.

41. You speak for?
You say you speak for yourself, yet you tell me what I give a damn about?

And by the way, my beef is with stereotyping anyone who supports Gore for president as unworthy, selfish and immoral. That stereotyping would include people like Michael Moore and Jimmy Carter just to name a couple of the unworthy. I think I can live with standing on the same side of an issue as such people.

7. RestoreGore, you make alot of sense here
and you are definitely right that we need to take a look at ourselves. And you are right that Al Gore does more than all of us combined.

I know you don't want him to run for President and I understand your reasons (although I disagree with them). Still, you certainly hold him in high esteem, just like so many of us here at DU do. We can all agree that he is a Renaissance Man.

But, please, RG, don't be so harsh on those of us who want the greatest man we can think of during our country's greatest hour of need. Many of us are frightened by these times we live in and we are even more frightened by what we may be leaving behind for our children. America needs a super-hero.

You may be right. Maybe he won't run. I hope you are wrong though. Let's face it, Al Gore is the only person truly qualified to do the task at hand.

8. Great Letter and awesome video, whereismyparty!
Thanks for taking the time to write and produce it. I will send it on to many many many of my friends.

Don't worry about RG shitting on our parade, i think she means well and as you say, she might be right, but she will do nothing but tell you/us how wrong we are over and over and over.... that's just what she does. pay it no mind. anyways-

here's to hoping and praying that one day Tipper will be awoken in the middle of the night by her husband saying- "I have to do it..." and to her replying as she said she would.

17. His work on this climate crisis now that effects the WORLD is more important
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x27415

And when you have seen what he has seen and know what he knows, you see that big picture as well. There is NO 'president' who can stop the glaciers from melting now with simply a stroke of a pen. That has to come from ACTION from all of us to now live our lives with less consumption and more moral fortitude regarding our choices, and demanding changes that will mitigate what we can now stop which will in turn cause a political tipping point because there will be no choice but for it to come... and Al Gore is now the leader of a global grassroots efforts to save this species from itself, and to me that is far more important than any selfish plea to fulfill a political fantasy over a moral imperative.

I then am happy he is staying on the path he has chosen because it is making some progress, but at this point WE need to do more to help him and to me that doesn't mean spending every waking hour begging him to be a "hero" when I have it within myself to be that hero or heroine because he has shown me how. I will be out demonstrating for this planet within this next year. I will be donating to his and other environmental efforts and supporting The Alliance for Climate Protection's ad blitz to jumpstart people into reality about this. And I will NOT be harrassing him daily to do something he knows so much more about regarding the pitfalls than any of us. I will NOT ask him to do that which I am not prepared to do myself.

He doesn't need to go back to that muck to prove anything to me or to have lasting and positive effect upon the world. And frankly, all of these ultimatums and those stating they will only send him money or support him if he does his "duty" seems rather arrogant and rude. That isn't meant to be harsh but simply an observation. The man has given his all for so many years and is still doing so, and if doing this is how he wishes to now make a difference because it is the better way then I say more power to him.

"We are not electing Gore, we are just getting his name on the ballot. We should not limit ourselves to just Gore supporters. Many who support other candidates can have an intrest that Gore be on the ballot. We need to also remember that we have Republican and Independent Gore supporters..."

State Election Code, Section 6061 - "...nomination papers shall be signed by voters registered as affiliated with the Democratic Party equal in number to not less than 1 percent or 500, whichever is fewer, in each congressional district...."
