Michael Moore’s Comments on Julian Assange Rape Allegations Spark Outrage

http://nation.foxnews.com/wikileaks/2010/12/16/michael-moore-s-comments-julian-assange-rape-allegations-spark-outrage

Filmmaker Michael Moore is in hot water over comments he made during Tuesday night’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann. In discussing rape allegations against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, Moore appeared to dismiss the accusations as “hooey” (although he was actually referring to what he views as the use of the allegations as a pretext to silence Assange), and repeated the false claim that Assange is only accused of having a condom break during consensual sex.

 read the comments for a trip into the bizarre

2. Some progressives are pretty outraged, too
like the folks at http://tigerbeatdown.com/, where they started the #MooreandMe hashtag because they were so upset by what they saw as Olbermann and Moore's dismissive attitude about the charges.

8. Those aren't progressives. Those are idiots.
Idiots who have not been paying attention to the trumped up charges against Assange.

3. i love Michael Moore but...
When I watched this interview I was a little disconcerted when he was characterizing these assault charges, I immediately predicted he was going to be criticize for that...perhaps rightfully so. I think he should have focused on one issue, without giving the other side ammunition to attack him on the other issue...which I think are two separate things. This is one problem I often find with Moore, I can find myself agreeing with him in large part, and then he sometimes says one thing that I think kind detracts from the issue at hand, and takes away from his credibility. But I do really love him and have great respect for his work and the way he has brought attention to some very important issues.

9. but aren't the charges "hooey"?
As I understand it, they don't really prosecute anyone for this. It more reminds me of the case in Israel where the woman accused the man of sex under false pretenses because he said he was Jewish and wasn't.

There is a limit to political correctness after all.

10. my understanding is the charges...
involved more than a broken condom. I have read reports that he was accused of holding a woman down and forcing her to have sex after she had revoked consent. Which I think we would all agree is quite serious and would be considered rape. There has been wide speculation in the media about the details of the charges, and I think the actual indictment is vague, and it's not clear the exact claims the accusers made. I just didn't think it was wise for Moore to be characterizing the charges when the facts are unclear and based on media speculation.

14. i clearly stated it was speculation
and that the indictment was vague without details about the accusations. that was the whole point i was making. and i also stated there was widespread speculation about the accusations. i thought i was very clear in what i said. as far as where i read it, it's all over the newspapers and the internet.

15. I have not read the allegations that she withdrew consent
if those are the allegations, they are serious. The only thing I've read about consent being withdrawn was not, in my opinion, well sourced.

I am not a Julian fan, while I hate that one person or group gets to decide what I get to know and not know I'm not sure I trust Julian either. But the charges at this point seem vague and unserious. I don't get why Sweden would hold this so close to the chest in light of the protests but perhaps their law requires it.

We'll have to wait and see that the charges are.

12. Did they use a filter on the sound to make him sound like he was lisping? Or was a side effect of
compressing and coping the video.
