3. OSU marching band is good but...

My wife and one kid had the opportunity to see the Western Carolina University marching band in exhibition mid-October at the Bands of America Super Regionals in Atlanta (high school marching band competition)and without a doubt they are better than the Ohio State marching band. Unfortunately my other son is in his high school marching band and was competing in Atlanta and did not get to see the WCU "Pride of the Mountains" marching band. We also got to see Michigan State University Marching Band at the BOA Grand Nationals in exhibition in November of this year. They were good but not at the level of WCU.

For the Buckeye fans I have seen OSU marching band on several occasions and I live in Ohio. I knew of the reputation of the WCU marching band but to see them in person was extraordinarily.

7. Take them to a DCI show, preferably a regional show in mid-to-late July.

Drum Corps International. If you can get to Finals in August, that's the best show possible. I posted a few vids of a few of my favorites above. For the Cavaliers video, the drill (shapes on the field) is just awesome; in the Cadets' show, pay close attention to the drum feature (it's just ridiculously tight); for Carolina Crown, it's the hornline that stands out.

They're all insanely good. If you can see any one or more of the following groups, take the opportunity and go see them. They're unbelievable.

The Cavaliers
Phantom Regiment
The Bluecoats (the crowd isn't boooing, they're "blooooo"-ing)
Carolina Crown
The Blue Devils
Santa Clara Vanguard

8. Thanks for the information...

This was our first year with marching band (high school level). Between the fundraisers, competition, working concession stands at the football games and volunteering at our high school band invitational I don't know if I will survive the next 3 years! I also found out last night that our high school will be hosting a BOA competition next October. My kid plays the base clarinet. He is also in the Ohio All-State Honor Band as a freshman (sorry for the bragging) and is very unusual for a freshman to be picked. His twin brother plays the viola and would not be caught dead in a marching band!

I have heard that the drum corps competition is really good. I will have to keep this in mind.

9. Just Superb

This is what college football used to be about before the corporatization of college campuses and athletic teams became farms for the pros....Would rather watch a good half-time show any day than here announcers from ESPN...
