He's absolutely right about the Left reclaiming Patriotism. In the hands of the Right (where it's been for decades), Patriotism has become something I shudder at now. It's a f*cking Toby Keith song. In the hands of the Right Patriotism has devolved into White Christian Gun-Owning Gay-Hating Feed the Rich greed and isolation.
Patriotism is joy at seeing EVERYONE being free to do what makes them happy and express their beliefs, without fear of being judged or maligned by others. Patriotism is the desire to live in a community, not just a country.

is celebrating the diversity of our population, not fearing someone because they're gay or hating someone because their skin is a different color.
Patriotism is being politically active, AND voting.
Patriotism is a serious commitment of time and energy to the betterment of us all.
So few of us are truly patriotic...

I always liked Maher, even when he was a self-styled "libertarian" and tried to tweak both sides. Now it's clear what side he's on and he obviously doesn't give a crap what the audience or the host thinks. He couldn't be more spot-on. Kudos, and thanks for posting.:applause:

the thoughts expressed by Bill Maher are main stream for anyone who actually thinks
so it should have been a spontaneous burst of acknowledgement of that!
IMO, it was either a gimmicked audience to hold down Bill Maher's reception -- and
that's certainly been done before -- OR ... he attracts boring audiences who think
about little other than Leno!

35. Great work by Bill Maher -- setting the record straight about the violent right wing .... |
|
and the gun obsessed among us -- the NRA owning the Supreme Court --
by the way, how are the bribes paid and where are they hidden?
Is it just jobs for Scalia's 9 kids -- or what?
Are Democrats merely intimidated by the right wing and NRA on guns -- ?
Basically the NRA targeted our liberals and moderates and anyone who supported
gun control -- that happened long ago.
As for the long list of violent expressions calling for action by right wing
commentators, Bill was able to recite quite a few -- and there are many, many
more. Should be illegal to say the things these right wingers say -- and yet
it's not their violent rhetoric which gets attention and censored -- it's the
insanity over a woman's breast!!

|
Edited on Thu Jan-13-11 12:49 PM by defendandprotect
that's why I like the idea of going outside the party to find a candidate for 2012 ...
Bernie Sanders could run on a Dem ticket --
Tom Hayden could run on a Dem ticket -- and many more --
including Bill Maher -- he's liberal enough that he could rid us of the many right wing
programs which are smothering the nation in crime -- Drug War for one -- unregulated
capitalism and its crimes for another!!
There was a time when he seemed to be trying fence sitting for a while -- and I really
disliked him in that period -- but think he's seen that he doesn't want to lie for a living?
