16. Opportunist?
He would be that if he kept his mouth shut, which he didn't.

8. He said he would have to look at his choices. Honest answer. How can
he commit to supporting a candidate whose identity is unknown?

9. He did not say that he would NOT.....
.... support the dem candidate, which speaks volumes. Support from Hagel could influence many independents and even republicans that still have a mind of their own (they obvisouly exist and Hagel is the perfect proof).

13. I think it's stunning that a staunch conservative Repub
would CONSIDER supporting the Dem candidate--and would say so on national TV.

7. Maher's admiration of Hagel: does it factor in the knowledge that
Hagel owned ES&S and was Chairman until 1995? He still had shares in ES&S's parent company as late as 2003 which he may not have adequately disclosed. ES&S machines counted the votes when he ran for election.

10. These were PAPER ballots
at least for his first election (I do not know about the second, but he was very popular by then, and won by a hige percentage), the kind that can be easily recounted. I know that there is ongoing buzz about his connection with ESS, I agree that he could have been more careful about it, but the association by itself does not prove anything.

Bev Harris' "Blackbox Voting" and has been around a long time (since the summer of 2003). Not that I trust anything from BBV. Looks like I need to do more research into the validity of the accusation. Don't want to be guilty of spreading more half-truths!

Here's a quote from a Hartman article published in CommonDreams:

"Back when Hagel first ran there for the U.S. Senate in 1996, his company's computer-controlled voting machines showed he'd won stunning upsets in both the primaries and the general election."

15. Best part IMHO
The answer to Maher's question about Petraeus "it's not only a dirty trick, but it's dishonest, it's hypocritical, it's dangerous and irresponsible". Retiring has its advantages I guess, though he was not exactly very careful with his words in the past either. Sorry to see him go, and I hope he will be back in some form or another.
