1. You would think someone working in a firearms related policy position would know something about gun
s.

You COULD have bought that gun with that 33 round magazine prior to 2004, while the ban was in effect.

The ban only banned the MANUFACTURE of new magazines. All the hundreds of thousands of 33 round magazines made and imported prior to 2004 were STILL LEGAL for sale. New in box.

He just would have paid about $80 for it, instead of $26.

3. Ex post facto.
How would you do that? Buy them back? At what market value?

4. Prohibit manufacture. Prohibit imports. Require registration of existing clips.
Heavily tax sales.

Worked for Tommy guns.

5. Wouldn't do anything if crazy kid could still afford it.
His gun was legally purchased. He managed to afford a very expensive pistol somehow.

6. Do you think Jared could have bought a Tommy Gun?
....

To become a registered owner, a complete FBI background investigation is conducted, checking for any criminal history or tendencies toward violence, and an application must be submitted to the ATF including two sets of fingerprints, a recent photo, a sworn affidavit that transfer of the NFA firearm is of "reasonable necessity," and that sale to and possession of the weapon by the applicant "would be consistent with public safety." The application form also requires the signature of a chief law enforcement officer with jurisdiction in the applicant's residence.

....

Between doing nothing and a machine gun-like ban lies a common sense compromise. High capacity clips, like machine guns, are inconsistent with public safety.

7. Maybe law enforcement just needs to confiscate them if caught in public.

If people want to play with them in their home, they can keep them. But, we should ban further sales and manufacturing. And again, even if the owner has a permit, high magazine/clips need to be controlled.

Finally, the laws allowing concealed and open carry in public -- churches, bars, public parks, nursery schools, restaurants, etc. -- have gotten far too "liberal" in recent years. It's time the gun lobby and those who carry in public learn to walk out the door without a weapon stuffed down their pants, except in "well regulated" circumstances.

8. Why 10 rounds, if you don't mind my asking?
What makes 10 rounds an empirically satisfactory magazine limit for civilians, as opposed to a 9-round or 11-round magazine?
