Despite some brow beating from CNN's John King, Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen didn't back down or apologize for his statements on the House floor that the lie by Republicans that the Affordable Care Act is a "government takeover" of health care is similar to the techniques used Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

2. I've been saying this for YEARS!!
Does it really matter that a Congressman shares the comparison on the House floor? I'm not so certain that it does matter. It's the truth...and by God, if the shoe fits, wear it. THEY do operate with lies and distortions. How long do we have to play nice, and not hurt their little feelings?

3. John King has not studied NAZI propaganda or how the NAZIs
actually gained their power.

He is ignorant on this subject.

5. So True
Having read a few books on the rise, you'll find some incredible similarities with the Bush administration, and the NAZIs, but now I have even more fear, as we seem unable to break from this corporatism, the SC made the citizen's united corporate tsunami of money ruling, so it seems we've reached this corporate stranglehold.

We can only hope a SC justice gets sick while Obama is in office, so he can appoint another anti-corporate justice, who will at least, with the four others adamantly opposed to the 5-4 ruling, the judicial activism of the radical conservative (fascists) on the SC, will reverse it, perhaps kicking corporate citizenship to the curb.

8. Repeating lies over and over was Goebbel's technique.
Those of us who are older and who read and heard a lot about the NAZIs know this very well. And if King doesn't want to read a lot of history books, he could watch some of the many documentaries on the NAZIs.

6. No, John King wants to keep his big paycheck.
That is his top priority.

The obvious truth be damned.

7. With today's communication capabilities
the Rove/Drudge/Limbaugh/Pox/CNN propaganda ministry is far more dangerous than Goebbels. The sad part is we fought World War Two to drive the Nazis into the dirt. Fascism has resurrected itself and changed its name to GOP. I offer this without apology. John King has been a reich wing shill for years.

9. And Frank Luntz, new GOP propaganda minister
Before the Nazis, propoganda did not have a negative conotation.

11. History, What a Concept!
Perhaps King would prefer to repeat history than learn from it.

What a pontificating douche!

12. I think its awesome
Glenn Beck compares liberals/progressives to nazi's with NO proof

Steve Cohen compares republican actions to nazi's with PLENTY of proof

Why can't Rep Cohen share information that is factual in a debate?

Let them prove that he is giving false statements.

Oh - what's that I hear? crickets????

13. Errrm . . . Republicans *are* like Nazis? Maybe it won't win you many civility points . . .
But Cohen had it right when he decried "countenancing lies" as leading to terrible things.

NOW would be a good time to stand up to the lies. Later may be too late.

15. Cohen is not backing down
because he is right on the money. Look, if the Republican Party doesn't want to be compared to Nazis they should stop emulationg them in word and deed.

16. The quotations that detail the Rethug "big lie" strategy
Edited on Thu Jan-20-11 08:16 AM by Fly by night
The Goebbels’ money quote about the big lie: (from www.thinkexist.com)

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

The phrase was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile (from wikipedia):

“His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.”

Sound like any political party we know? We have faced this strategy for years here in Tennessee as the Rethugs fought back every effort to allow us to vote on verifiable voting systems. They have succeeded and we now have a legislature full of Rethug overt racists, pug-ugly jackals and ex-Hooters girls (really).

Tennessee has seceded from the United States. And that’s no lie.

PS: Now if we can get Representative Cohen (an old college classmate of mine) to reject the "big lie" that carrying a handgun will make him (and those around him) safer, we'll all be better off (and so will he.)

17. really?
So where's King's interview with Palin on using the antisemitic term 'blood libel'? Hypocrisy much? Double standards as usual. When most hear the name Goebbels they know it means 'big lie.' How else do you expose a propaganda technique if you can't use terms associated with it?

18. John King is becoming more of a tool every single day.
He was more concerned with whether Cohen was calling Repubs "nazis" (which Cohen clearly was not) than about ALL the lies the Repubs are telling about health care. If the media (hey, King, I mean you, you tool) did a better job on calling out these lies, people like Cohen wouldn't be talking about Goebbels. John King's show is getting harder and harder to watch. I thought he was a smart young man. But he's turning into a bigtime tool. Always catering to the Repubs and their message.
