President Obama gives an advance look at what he'll ask of Congress on Tuesday.

1. "costs are going up" True. So where's the cost of living increase in Social Security benefits?

President Obama: "Everybody should have a chance at the American dream."

Just a chance?

I suppose we all have a "chance" at also winning the lottery.

But just a few lucky ones will!

We need a lot more than just a mere chance of achieving economic security and justice.

We need living wage jobs for all Mr. President and a clear government plan to bring about full employment and economic security.

And the last thing in the world we need to hear in your State of the Union address is that you support big cuts in important social programs that will balance the budget on the backs of working people and the elderly.

3. Yes. But what will we do if those "last words we need" are

expressed? I have said repeatedly for some time now that how the Democratic Party responds to those words next week will define it now and approximately forever. Will we fight? How will we fight--what manner? Will we go into France mode, or will we hammer out emails to disinterested congress-stickfigures? Will we Twitter or Facebook one another in the manner of Alone Together by Turkle? Will we call again on Bernie Sanders, who will respond, then we will respond, and those responses will be our final substantive actions in the matter. What will we do and say in answer to the dismantling of a 75-year Democratic Program that has worked reasonably well?
