:eyes: I wonder if Jesus has the power to save the aliens stuck in the volcano? I guess I had better wear special underwear and marry at least 4 wives to make sure.

That is a pet peeve of mine too. It's actually a positive commentary on the difference between true faith and santajesus. Too bad Donahue doesn't get it.

looking at anything she does. She has never known the boundaries of good taste. Why would you expect her to know them now?

8. She won me over. I used to be revolted by her until I watched her
show. Now I appreciate her "shock" comedian style. She really works hard to make people laugh in the most shocking rudest way. She is a jolt to the sensitive and a refreshing unexpected wind to the stodgy.

Congrats, Kathy. She seems very liberal and honest I like that.

10. Um, she was dissing the false piety
and hypocrisy of the award winners who proclaim from the podium that they won because Jesus and God wanted them to.

No more and no less.

The title of this thread should be changed. She was dissing the parading of faith in a totally inappropriate venue where we all know the vibe is self-worship. Okay?

Read. It. Slowly. If. You. Have. To.

7. In any report of this incident, see if the setup to Kathy's joke is reported.
"Suck it, Jesus" comes after Kathy alleges that Jesus was secretly pulling for the Dog Whisperer to win. In other words, Jesus had it out for her, and she gives it right back. That's the joke.

Anyone who wants to condemn her for what she says should quote her fully.

Kathy rocks.

I'm the first person to chuckle when all of the borderline-softcore porn soap stars get up at the daytime emmys and start thanking jesus for their awards. I'm not a Christian...if anything, I'm a Buddhist.... So, if you're not a Christian or if you disagree with Christianity or whatever, join the club. And if you want to joke about Jesus, go ahead. Just don't get lost thinking that it's automatically some sort of intellectual triumph. And remember to be just as open-minded and jovial whenever someone lampoons the foibles or inconsistencies of your own sacred cows.

The overwhelming majority of our problems stemming from religion in this country come from Christians. Not that other extremists don't cause problems, but they're not as big within our country.

18. Check out this BS spin from Faux
Ninety-four percent of America's founding era documents mention the Bible; 34 percent quote the Bible directly. The idea of bringing unity to the universal is a particularly Biblical concept.

The freedoms we enjoy in this country to speak freely and to live freely are directly related to that man who died on a cross 2,000 years ago.

So, you see, Kathy Griffin, Jesus has everything to do with you winning that award.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,296683,00.html

"Founding era documents"? :eyes: I also love how RWers extoll free speech rights while seething with contempt over their exercise.

19. I'm not a Christian, or even religious, but I don't think this helps with general civility.
Why engage in the kind of behavior the "other side" does--insulting those who do not believe as you do.

This behavior leads generally to conflict and doesn't raise the tone within a society that desperately needs reconciliation and common ground.

"Why engage in the kind of behavior the "other side" does?" -- a good question. I don't even object to the original comment so much as I do all of the "Thank you, Kathy, I love you" responses. It all smacks too much of that philosophy major who lived down the hall in your freshman dorm and who thought that him ditching his parents' church was the boldest philosophical step the world had taken since the Reformation. I remember how so many DU'ers (not all of them, mind you, but many) sided with the Muslims protesting the Danish "Muhammed" cartoons some months ago. Do I smell a double standard? I'll be the first to agree that there is some effed up stuff in traditional Christianity, but I am also consistently bothered by the idea that we can set aside Christianity as the one demographic group that we can target with insults and sweeping generalizations. It's all so...so...freshman.

24. People are tired of religion being imposed on their lives.
Edited on Sun Sep-16-07 06:22 PM by iaviate1
That explains the reaction you complain about. I don't see people going around telling others they CAN'T worship their gods, but I do see people going around saying they can't love others... they have to kill others... they have to hate others... because their God or Jesus would disapprove otherwise. We shouldn't be surprised to see rejection of religion after it being forced upon us for so long.

25. "People are tired of religion being imposed on their lives."
I'm hip. I live near the buckle of the bible belt. I can't buy liquor by the drink at my local restaurant because the local Baptist congregations flip out any time anyone suggests changing the law. And I still think KG's original statement is marginally funny at best, and that all of the "Thank you, we love you!" drivel is sophomoric. You can reject religion without being infantile about it.

Sorry for your liquor issues, but many of us have much bigger problems from the religious lunacy. Like interference with relationships, housing, jobs, violence, and sometimes life itself.

I would probably thank everybody within earshot including Jesus. But tell me......when did they start a rule about who you may or may not thank? If Griffin does believe Jesus had anything to do with her award, thats her business and if you have ever heard her act, you know damn well he didn't.

34. Agree, and I just bet Jesus had a good chuckle over it also
I'm sure he can hold his own under criticism and a good ribbing. Anyone who's goes up in arms about this on a religious basis is showing a few holes in their armor of faith.

That fear they feel is all about a loss of control - thousands of years of mind control getting undermined. And everything they base their feeling of security on begins to wobble.
