This is a great piece of writing from Matthews. It is true. It is the message that Democrats should run on and govern with.

But it also proves that Matthews hasn't been paying attention. I'd put the odds of Obama saying/doing any of this (with the exception of a few phrases thrown towards education) at about zero.

Bottom line: Matthews thinks Obama won't please the GOP tonight. Ha ha.

1. It really doesn't matter what Obama says tonight.
It's what he does that matters, and I won't be wasting my time listening to a feel-good speech. Been there, done that.

3. Matthews knows this how?

How does he know that Obama is going to give a progressive speech? All he has done for 2 years is appease the GOP at every turn and the base has been screaming at him for 2 years that this will get him nothing, the GOP will never turn over a new leaf. Obama doesn't care. He just keeps appeasing. Keep in mind that Obama will be speaking to an audience of Congressmen and Senators, half of whom are goopers. He is going to seek to say things both parties will like so he can get applause. So guaranteed the speech is going to be appeasing. Democrats there who don't like what he says will be glumly silent. But REPUBLICANS who don't like what he says will BOO. Simple equation. If he wants to look well received by them he will have to suck up to the GOP and all hype to the contrary is just that. Hype. Anybody can speculate. When Obama speaks it is going to be please love me, I love the GOP. Just like the last 2 years.
