...at the very end, the audio cuts out when she utters an anti-war message:

"If mothers ruled the world, there wouldn't be any god-damned wars in the first place." They cut off everything after "god-"

67. They did it to Ray Romano when he was
talking about Frasier and his TV wife getting it on (apparently that's what was said). They went away for much longer, same aerial shot. Personally as an MCO that had to run the Emmy's last night I'm glad Fox did a good job dumping. Otherwise the huge FCC fine would be on my head if I missed something they decided to prosecute. And my job. Fox, in this case, is just reacting to the FCC's ridiculous rules. Everybody is trigger happy at all the networks and the stations.

87. troll?
i happen to have an informed opinion since i ran the show last night. It's not a conspiracy, it's the fact that local stations get fines from the FCC for things that they shouldn't. They in turn complain to the network and things start to be self-censored. If she had said "no more wars" instead of " no more goddamned wars" she wouldn't have been dumped. That's the truth. The sopranos guy said that the governmaent was run by gangsters. He wasn't dumped. If he had said "goddamned gangsters" he would have been.

94. i know at my station it's very difficult in a live situation
i have no idea how much delay FOX was working with. we have a seven second delay which gives us enough time to dump, but makes it pretty difficult to lose less than two seconds, usually more like 5 seconds since we want to make sure we get all of the (usually) language (our dump button blurs video and drops sound). less of a delay means more accurate dumps, but it's much easier to miss something which would be the worst scenario since fines are so high. So, to make sure in a live setting you don't miss you have a longer delay. And, in reference to why they went to an aerial shot instead of just dropping audio like they did with Katherine Heigl (sp?) it probably was due to how much time they had to react or just the director's choice.

When it comes down to it, it was one or two people's split second decisions. They might have both been right-wingers; who knows. But it definitely wasn't Rupert Murdoch pressing the dump button.

of others, without completely cutting their speech, why did they do it for Sally Fields...its not like she was having a turrets attack. She said two words they could have bleeped...not the entire speech.

What could she say that was so wrong, the majority of Americans agree with her.

not from Fox. Fox is not smart enough to move that fast.
The call to cut her mike came from the director or producer sitting in the controlroom.

45. not quite ... since the Jackson boobie incident, almost all live events
(including football games) are on a 7 second delay ... it's rather interesting watching a pic-in-pic of the feed from normal cable and from the cable box on ABC ... while watching a VHS tape (through the box), I often have the "normal" (straight from the wall, not through the cable box) feed in the pic-in-pic so that I can stop the tape and see the entire sports segment on ABC, despite the "normal feed" has already missed a few seconds, I can catch it completely on the feed through the cable box and vcr.

86. same mentality as made 911 such a howling success...
them fukking pigs! It drives me crazy how they get away with crap! I thought, as did everybody in the world, the 911 coverage was LIVE but they were actually using a (well rehearsed?) delay system, just like always! It wasn't LIVE! And it's common knowlege, apparently, among the media types! But fricking fools (which included me until i heard about this on Mike Malloy the other evening) all thought, finger in mouths i imagine, that it was being televised as it unfolded, but NOOOO! And these fukking countries of our, full of big tough men who act like kittens when the pig cracks the whip! Goddammit! They aint even ashamed of themselves! Sally Fields represents a helluva lot more people then the punks who censored her! Those same techs booed Michael Moore a couple years ago- bushevikism runs deep in this culture of ours..

89. Well I don't know what channel this was...
But I was pretty close to the towers when it happened (second impact anyway), and had a TV on in the room. You could see the orange fireball outside through the window and it appeared at the same time on the screen. So at least one channel was broadcasting live.

Now I didn't actually see what happened outside. This was a classroom and most people were watching the TV, but some were watching the towers out the window. But everybody reacted at the same time. I guess I'll never hear that much "HOLY SHIT!" ever again! If there was a delay it was incredibly small and hard to notice. I could give it a one-second delay, max. I think there was no delay though.

92. i mixed up something i heard other night with Mike Malloy...
Malloy never had on his show anything about this- and the progran where it was being discussed is actually quite far out (i sorta embarassed even to mention it!) in right field! the program mainly was about planted witnesses who, during the actual live coverage, seemed rehearsed and said the buildings collapsed 'due to the jets and the terrible fires' etc (clips from different stations, some which i can actually recall from the event, were played, and it indeed sounded very phoney in this context)...remembering that morning, and what was going on on tv, whether there was a delay or not is probably rather silly- the second hit was seen by people looking at the wtc, and cameras pointed there. Nevertheless, i heard a local hate radio goof today denouncing Ms Field for 'politicising' the emmys etc, and remembering the booing of Moore for his F911 speech and so on, i am more then ready to believe the very worst of them bushevik pig bastards....

82. Actually, I think even if she had said,
"damned war" it probably would have passed. I've heard "damn" or "damned" or "damnit" on tv before, I think the main issue is when you put "God" in front of it. :shrug:

The main issue here is that Fox's censorship went way further than it needed to. Not just in Sally's case, but also Romano's and Heigl's and I think at least one other, they bleeped out more than just a bad word or two, they cut out whole sentences AND cut-away to an aerial shot. That's way over-the-top, if you ask me. Overkill.

What was really weird was the case of Katherine Heigl - when they announced her name for the win, you could see her say, "shit!" - and THEN they muted and cut-away. :silly: They totally messed that one up.

88. Yeah, you could tell
but that doesn't matter. It's only the hearing. The truth is that after 10pm, it's safe harbor and these rules don't apply, but because of simulcasts in different time zones they still dumped to be safe.

And goddamned isn't on "the list" of offensive words, but it's right on the line and with fines being so high and the janet jackson thing finally get settled everyone's jumpy. For small stations, one big fine can shut them down.

From here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/17/AR2007091700097.html

"Told that she had been bleeped, Field responded: "Oh well. I've been there before. Well, good. I don't care. I have no comment other than, oh well. I said what I wanted to say. I wanted to pay homage to the mothers of the world, and let their work be seen and valued."

Pressed for more comment, she responded: "I think probably shouldn't have said the God in front of the ... I would have liked to have said more bleeped-out words.""

The line was not bleeped out in the Canadian feed. I am sad to hear that it was for all my American brothers and sisters.
I cheered when she got that line out. It was a tiny moment of truth to power, but a great tiny moment. I never dreamed you guys south of the 49th never caught that.
Why would they actually cut away from her entirely as well? So the public couldn't lip read her message? Sad that in America today one can't mention any statement in public against the war. Peace is bad. Right is wrong. Up is down.

I didn't hear this much uproar when Tricky Dick #2 (Cheney) told Patrick Leahy to go f*ck himself on the senate floor. That was a helluva lot worse than "goddamned war".

Since that time this rotten, corrupt, lying, cheating,conniving, murdering gang of thugs have driven this country so far into the ground that sometimes curse words are the only thing that do their actions justice.

Bravo for Sally Field. I too, watched her and enjoyed her in the Flying Nun. If only they would bring back the reruns of that show instead of the stupid crap that passes for TV shows these days............ Heck, bring her back as the Flying Nun, aged but still beautiful.

a "stronger" word than " sleeping with",
when referring to Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammar.

They have since moved the article- Damn.

46. The global light fixture, a.k.a. the "Sphere of Censorship"
That was how someone at the Emmy party I went attended described it. All that was missing was "The Girl from Ipanema" playing over the shot- the first time it happened I thought it was the final episode of "The Sopranos" all over again.

Has anyone seen how the Hollywood trade papers are reacting to this?

38. We carried it here in Canada and the words "God damned war" came through
clear as a bell! I was surprised. Usually when we carry a program from the U.S.A. we get the same thing you hear. I said to my son, when I heard her, the Fox Newtwork must not have the program on a 7 second delay and so she got all her words on the air. Go Sally!!!!!!

73. Exactly. My point is that she gave Faux an opening that she did not have to.
They can always say they had to do it for GD, and then extend it a bit to cover what they really wanted to cover.

74. HBO and Showtime are not the same.
The law is only for broadcast networks using publicly distributed airwaves. And it doesn't always apply--it depends on the time and the word.

For example, you can say GD after 11:00 eastern on certain shows that have shown an "M" rating. You can say "damn" any time, but add "god" and the bleep is necessary. You can say "ass" but as soon as you say "asshole" they have to bleep it.

All these are enforced by the FCC, and under Bush they have been giving out some hefty fines.

I think all this bullshit is crazy, but it is the way it has been for a long time!

80. Then I invite you to monitor a few hours
of daytime soaps on ABC, CBS and NBC, Mon-Fri from about 11am to 3pm depending on your time zone and which ones your local affiliates carry. G-D, SoB etc, all are there, clear as in any tavern or sports' stadium.

I'm no prude and can (and do) swear just as well as anyother daughter of a Brooklyn born, Italian Marine, but I was a little shocked, no make that, not amused at the antics of Jolie Fisher and Brad Garrett and the nipple jokes and his head between her knees reference. But hey, they have a sitcom on, you guessed it, FOX.

100. Like I said, the laws are complicated (extremely).
I'm not familiar with soaps, but the bottom line is that all of these laws essentially rotate around the question of whether or not children are likely to be watching.

I'm not saying it is a good idea, but I have no doubt that Sally Field was aware of the laws but simply not thinking when she let a gd fly off her lips. It gave Fox a perfect excuse to do exactly what they did.

Personnally I think the laws are bs, but they are there.

that are considered obscene. piss is though, but only when used to describe the bodily function. The rules are rather out of date and the FCC is cracking down more now than they have for decades.

101. GD may not be one of the words but virtually all broadcast networks bleep it.
Sally Field should have known this, in any case, she did give Faux an opening to do exactly what they did and save criticism that it was actually a censoring of political opinion.

42. I sent a note to the Fox Network
The only address I could find was askfox@fox.com:

Just wanted to send a note to tell you that if you think the American people are not savvy enough to see that you deliberately censored Sally Field's comment regarding war you are mistaken. In this country that we call the "land of the free, home of the brave" and for whom our children fight in those wars to supposedly protect the freedoms you so cavalierly take away with the push of a button, freedom of speech is something covered by the blood and sweat of those who have served and now serve. Shame on FOX for censoring that which they otherwise claim to support when it suits their purposes. I will no longer be watching the FOX network.

Signed,
A mother fed up with this god dammed war.
~~~~
This was not just about a vulgarity. They actually cut away and went black. If you want to bleep a word you just bleep that word and the rest goes on. This was censorship and it stinks. Another actress upon hearing she won said "shit" and I read her lips and it was bleeped but nothing else was and nothing went black. To me it appears they just didn't want any criticism of this war, and that goes beyond their rules about vulgarity.
97. FOX sports is notorious for being lax
and there is a large backlog on these cases. The Janet Jackson thing is still going on. The appeal just happened this week and there's a 30-day extension going on. That fine was levied was 3.5 years ago. The FCC hasn't proposed any fines since mid-2006 due to inconsistencies in the law. They're waiting to see what the courts say.
99. stupid FCC, stupid congress, stupid christian groups that
watch television and get all their congregation to call in when there's a cuss word and force fines. Dumping on cuss words is a reaction to the stiff fines the FCC levied after the Super Bowl 3.5 years ago. There weren't many 5 or 7 second delays until that Halftime show. Now it's basically mandated. You can't own a television station and not have one or you risk being fined and losing your license.
I found this clip of FAUX's recap of the Emmys where they only cut out the GD. If anyone wants to hear more of it. Couldn't find an uncensored version like we heard in Canada. If anyone has one, post it.
Odd that FAUX couldn't do this at the live event that went out to the whole country and only later on their network news show that caters to "Liberal Hollywood" snipers.:sarcasm:
