A British court ruled that Eunice and Owen Johns could not be foster parents because of their anti-gay views: "Lord Justice Munby and Mr Justice Beatson ruled that laws protecting people from discrimination because of their sexual orientation "should take precedence" over the right not to be discriminated against on religious grounds" (BBC source).

Ana and Cenk both appear to defend the Johns' rights to be foster parents given their backgrounds.

On today's show, Thom Hartmann also debated Bryan Fischer from the American Family Association about this story.

1. Britain must be long on foster parents . . .
Having been a foster parent for 11 years, I have been astounded at the people they let be foster parents here in the US. Pretty much if you were breathing and didn't have too bad of a crimanal record, you could be a foster parent. Britain must have either lots of people to choose from for foster parents or don't need as many foster homes.

2. Hey Ana and Cenk, you're missing a vital point
What if the child they adopt ends up being gay?

8. I think I'm missing your point:
Medical research has established a person is gay from some enzyme or biological action occurring/not occurring inter-utero. This follows that what a person's eventual sexual encounters as an adult has little to do with the stereotype of being labeled homosexual or not. They still have the desire to love a person of the same sex.

It is our culture and religious bent that will probably determine whether this person will be 'forced' into a heterosexual relationship as a means of fitting into their parents' mold. This being somewhat unhappy and following their heart and adapting the homosexual love they were predetermined biologically. Our culture is so hung up what is a natural and probably the strongest human urge; sex. It fells great and it allows a stronger bond between one or more partners. After all, the human animal is social.

10. My point was, if the child ends up being gay
he/she will grow up in an abusive environment. If it were up to me, anti gay bigots wouldn't be allowed to have children period. But while we can't prevent people from having children on their own, we can prevent them from adopting.

4. I mean, it's wrong, they seem like nice enough people
But saving a kid from the brainwashing probably isn't bad either.

So did John Wayne Gacy , I'm sure.

I like seeing religion having to answer for its ideas. She says she feels put upon. Poor poor put upon Christians! They never get a break! She says her views against homosexuality are "moral". Not.

Anyway, let them prove they can be tolerant 1st. There is good reason to expect they won't.

6. I think it is just as wrong to disqualify these people from fostering
children than it is to refuse gay people to become foster parents or to adopt children.

Two wrongs don't make one right!

11. If the child turned out to be gay it is likely some form of abuse would have happened.
I realize this is a tough decision, but I think the court came out on the right end of it. Sometimes a tough stance based on principle is necessary. This is no different than if the couple had viewed blacks and jews as sub-humans, based on their religious beliefs. Possibly more severe actually, because in such a case they wouldn't have adopted a child who is "possibly black".

I like how they try to portray themselves as the victims, I must add. This is soo typical of christians who think they are entitled to their bigotry, and just because "everyone does it" it is okay.
