South Korean government catches grief for burying pigs alive in a snowy pit
By Patrick Winn
March 4, 2011

A South Korean animal rights group has released some seriously disturbing footage of pigs dumped into a pit and buried alive.

Warning: the video .... might very well ruin your day. Soon after the dramatic piano riffs and animal rights messages, we see pigs crammed into a pit and smothered with dirt. The cacophony of terrified squeals gets stuck in your head.

Why is the South Korean government doing this? To rid the country of foot-and-mouth disease, which has run rampant through Korean farms. The livestock industry is in "crisis mode," according to the Christian Science Monitor, which reports that one region has lost four-fifths of its pigs.

Religious and animal rights groups point out that by law animals must be killed or anaesthetised before burial, but the AFP reports that agencies are running short of both vaccines and anaesthesia.

Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE) released the video of pigs being dumped into a hole alive, calling for an immediate halt to the live burial. CARE said, "animals do feel pain like humans and the Korean government should seek an alternative mean to solve the problem.

This is horrible. It seems to me that other nations, including the United States, should offer to provide the vaccines and anaesthesia they need to put these poor animals to sleep without pain and discomfort. BBI

3. I understand. I watched it, my spouse won't. It wasn't easy but now I fully understand

just how barbaric this practice is.

I remember playing with pigs ( or trying to) on a farm when I was little.

My folks and relatives told me that if I was able to put salt on their tails they would stop running away from me and let me pet them!

I just wanted to play with and pet them.

Well, I never got close enough to use the salt shaker!

They were quick and I was little and slow compared to them.

By the time I tired out and gave up the pigs were still full of energy and cleaner than me!

The good ole days visiting relatives on a small farm.

5. I think I'd walk off my job if I were asked to do this
Watching this video made me think of the Nazi death squads- but at least the Nazis were decent enough to shoot the Jews before they buried them. Yeah, I know- they only spared them one bullet apiece, and in a lot of cases that wasn't enough to kill them, but it was more consideration than these pigs got.

You have to go pretty low to compare unfavorably with a Nazi.

7. Animals should be taken off of everyone's
list of things to eat. For this and many, many other reason. Boycott cruelty-go vegan!

Edited on Wed Mar-09-11 03:56 PM by Charleston Chew
__________
EARTHLINGS is an award-winning documentary film about the suffering of animals for food, fashion, pets, entertainment and medical research. Considered the most persuasive documentary ever made, EARTHLINGS is nicknamed “the Vegan maker” for its sensitive footage shot at animal shelters, pet stores, puppy mills, factory farms, slaughterhouses, the leather and fur trades, sporting events, circuses and research labs.

The film is narrated by Academy Award® nominee Joaquin Phoenix and features music by platinum-selling recording artist Moby. Initially ignored by distributors, today EARTHLINGS is considered the definitive animal rights film by organizations around the world. “Of all the films I have ever made, this is the one that gets people talking the most,” said Phoenix. “For every one person who sees EARTHLINGS, they will tell three.”
