6. What is happening across the country
is nothing less than a clearly orchestrated coup d'état by the fascist forces of corporate power in America. Conquest of the Federal government is virtually complete. Now it's the state's turn. This is really happening. It's not a made for TV movie.

7. Paradigm Shift
I've been screaming it for years and I wrote a big book about it. The Dems must grow a pair and quit letting the Repugs frame the message! Paradigm Shift: The Palin Matrix.

11. So let me get this straight
They will gut the budget, on purpose or by incompetence, then declare a de facto martial law and then sell off the cities and municipalities to corporations? Is that how this works? Big corporations married to big government. Where did I hear of that before? Well, I'm not going do a Godwin here because that's just so blase now. Where this also occurred was turn of the 19th-to-20th century China. There, big landowners, in collusion with local governments would basically gouge the peasants. The result of generations of abuse led to what is now the communist China. If the United States don't want to become a communist country, I would strongly suggest that the freakazoid GOPers back off from this wholesale corporate theft of the country.

14. Well welcome to DU then.
But there are other times in history too....like when Cromwell invaded Ireland and took the land away from the Catholics ...history is filled with examples of this kind of predatory economics.

15. Wasn't that part of the plot in RoboCop?
Omni Consumer Products plans to destroy "Old Detroit" to build their new Delta City, a pattern they no doubt intend to repeat in other cities.

17. My wife called him an idiot. I said, "No, he's an evil genius. This is Lex Luthor level scheming."
For those who didn't watch the video, Gov. Luthor did this:

1) Raised taxes (yes, a Republican raising taxes) on poor people and the elderly, to generate $1.7 billion in new revenues . . . that he will give directly to businesses in the form of $1.8 billion in tax cuts only for business.

2) To deal with the real budget problem, he will cut aid to municipalities and schools, throwing many of them into severe financial distress.

3) He will have the power to declare the schools and municipalities he impoverished are in a "financial emergency" and have the power to appoint Emergency Financial Managers to take over these schools and towns.

4) The governor appointed Emergency Financial Managers will have the power to terminate any contract, including collective bargaining agreements.

5) They will also have the power to dismiss elected officials.

6) They can also disincorporate cities and towns, consolidate school districts, etc. without anyone voting on it.

and lastly, 7) in the House version of the bill, an Emergency Financial Manager does not have to be a human being. It can be a . . . CORPORATION!

Welcome to Michigan, a subsidiary of Koch Industries.

18. Situation in Ohio right now
I'm from Ohio where the whole rep. party is just quietly going
about legislating collective bargaining away. No way for the
Dems to stop it here. It will probably be signed by the gov by
April 1. I'm going to a rally tomorrow at 6:30AM just to get
in to hear a Rep. explain why this is good for Ohio. ALL
public employees are included..fire, police, educators, etc.

Right now we educators pay 10% of our gross salaries into the
retirement system but that is being raised to 14% under this
new legislation...as well as paying more for health insurance.
We ARE taxpayers, too...get so tired of hearing how the
taxpayers are being hurt by my big salary and benefits.

The worst part is losing all control over working conditions.
When I first started teaching (no unions then) there were not
textbooks available for all the students, dress codes (no
moustaches or beards for me/ties were mandatory of men/no
pantsuits for women, nylons were mandatory even in 90 degree
weather). Class sizes were huge...in high school some
teachers had 200 students each day. When a woman became
pregnant, she had to resign her job when she "began to
show". Raises were given at the whim of the school
boards, no discussions with the professionals. We had no
health care nor life insurance. Sounds like the turn of the
century, doesn't it. But, it was in the late 1960s. Salaries
were so bad that there weren't enough teachers. The state of
Ohio was so desperate for teachers that after two years of
college, you could start teaching fulltime on a
"Cadet" certificate and promise to finish as you
were working.

These will be in the new Ohio law: Ruling out yearly raises
unless some--as yet undeveloped--evaluation says you deserve
one "on merit". At the same time, layoffs can not
even consider seniority as a factor. Raises and layoffs will
all be at the discretion of the building principal. Tranfer
rights are gone. No teacher will be able to speak up or
challange the principal for fear of losing her job. How
tempting will it be to lay off those teachers near retirement
to save money?

OH YES...ONLY THE BEST AND BRIGHEST COLLEGE GRADS WILL BE
RACING TO COMPETE FOR A JOB IN EDUCATION IN OHIO.....NOT!!!
This is going to roll across the US...22 states are now
involved in removing bargaining rights. We need a revolt of
the people!!
