1. Apparently they're making great progress |
|

so why don't we um, wait and see before we condemn all that toxic crap to groundwater/ocean?
Or at least get a second hysterical opinion from Robert Alvarez.

2. The only reason they made progress with buildings #5 & #6 is because.... |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-19-11 01:21 AM by Tx4obama
those two buildings did not explode like the other ones have. There is a total of over 2500 tons of nuclear fuel/spent rods at the Dai-ichi plant. Building five has 250 tons and building six has 280 tons. That means there are still around 2000 tons that are NOT being cooled down.
The nightmare is no where close to being over or under control!
Note: The amount at Chernobyl was only 180 tons

3. Those pools are about as hot as the inside of your dishwasher |
|
and yes, they are being cooled down. "Backup diesel generators have been connected to cool the spent fuel pools at Units 5 and 6. As of 4 PM JST, temperatures in those pools have reached 65.5 and and 62 degrees Celsius." http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=115x280434#280440

4. What does that have to do with buildings 1, 2, 3, and 4? |
|
There is still 2000 tons of fuel and spent rods in the other four buildings (and in an additional spent fuel pool)- three of those buildings have had explosions and will not be so easily fixed, and a good chance not at all.

5. Hard to know for sure. |
|
It seems they've reached an equilibrium where things could go either way.
Power should be getting hooked up right about now, which means they could potentially restore pumping to the reactors AND the pools.
They've had generators pumping water on #3 all day today, about 80 tons.
The additional spent fuel pool is "secured".

6. But the fact is that building five and six were not damaged like the other buildings. |
|
So they were able to use all the existing equipment in buildings five and six, all they had to do is get electricity into those two buildings. BUT and it is a big BUT - the other buildings and equipment are damaged and some of it was blown to smithereens.

First clean up what can be cleaned and then bury it, and every other reactor in Japan. Don't spend the billions it would take to rebuild them on nuclear reactors, spend it on solar, wind and other energy sources until they become the standard and oil, coal, gas and nuclear power become the alternative.

only option, bury it. And do it asap. This should be a military action on the highest priority level. They can save 5&6 but #3 blew up 3 thousand feet into the air and scattered thousands of spent fuel rods. There is no recovery for that mess

11. I think you're misunderstanding the report |
|
The pools and rods are still intact, but the concern was that water was evaporating and/or leaking out which could lead to a fire.

I do know the pools are intact, so unless the explosion somehow lifted the rods out of the pool without destroying it, the bulk of the spent fuel remains.

15. Are you sure they know the pools are intact? |
|
From everything I have heard they say they don't know if they have water or not because no one can get close enough to look.

16. that was a huge explosion |

I don't see how the pools could logically be intact.

13. Godot51 has the only logical course to take |

Quote bu Godot51; First clean up what can be cleaned and then bury it, and every other reactor in Japan. Don't spend the billions it would take to rebuild them on nuclear reactors, spend it on solar, wind and other energy sources until they become the standard and oil, coal, gas and nuclear power become the alternative. End Quote.
Why do we always wait until there's a crisis to do what everyone knows should be done now or 40 years ago ? Nixon said we have to become more independent and every president since. Have we ? Or have we become more dependent ? Those who run things are not going to give up their precious profits. Even if they could switch from oil to solar or wind, they wouldn't because that's man's greedy mentality these days.
We have to change over to wind, solar, battery, etc; NOW. We keep talking but there's no realistic endeavor to accomplish what the future dictates need be done. JFK had us put a man on the moon with 1960's technology within 10 years. With today's technology we should be switching to alternatives globally but when did man think logically ? Scientists say if they pit solar panels across the state of AZ that would be enough to power the entire US.
How many solar power plants would the U.S. need to meet its electrical needs? One solar power plant, using Cool Earth's technology, covering 150 miles by 150 miles, would generate enough energy to meet all the electrical needs of the United States through 2030.
It all comes down to the money. It's like heroine to those 400 or so who own everything. Once you get a taste you need more and more, then you're hooked and will hurt anyone to get your fix.
