Simi Valley California was the site of the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history in 1959, and the amounts of radiation leaked to the environment and atomosphere were more than 240 times that of the accident at 3-Mile Island.

Study Says Lab Meltdown Caused Cancer
Scientists say details about the 1959 accident near Simi Valley continue to be withheld. Other contamination at the site is much clearer.

A reactor in Chatsworth began leaking radioactive gas on July 14, 1959. Some area residents blame the facility for their health issues and say the site remains contaminated.

A Boeing official said the company was committed to a timely and thorough cleanup of the site in a way that protects public health.

Half a century after the accident, nuclear cleanup operations and chemical decontamination remain incomplete.

1. Thank you Shallah Kali for posting this...
I am very aware of this history and am proud of the people from this
region who have fought tirelessly to make a difference in their and their
family's environment.

2. It is horrible that 60+ years later they STILL haven't cleaned it up
I just recently came across this and wanted to get a little more attention to it so hopefully they will finally be forced to do the right thing.

3. Like children playing with hand grenades.

That is some interesting reading.

Like one statement saying they should have shut down the reactor, but no reactor- no jobs. Their lives depended on it running.

I cannot justify nuclear. And we have exposed ourselves to so much radioactive material over the last half century, I really wonder what health issues have been created by it. And it should be stopped immediately. We really should put a stop to the big uses of nuclear. Kind of like DDT and Carbon Tetrachloride.

I should add that I just lost an uncle who lived in Simi Valley for most of his life. Tumors.

4. The worst disaster was probably SL-1, that directly killed three and had no containment.
But who cares, that was just in rural Idaho.

5. I care.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SL-1

The SL-1, or Stationary Low-Power Reactor Number One, was a United States Army experimental nuclear power reactor which underwent a steam explosion and meltdown on January 3, 1961, killing its three operators. The direct cause was the improper withdrawal of the central control rod, responsible for absorbing neutrons in the poorly-designed reactor core. The event is the only known fatal reactor accident in the United States.<1><2> The accident released about 80 curies of I-131,<3> which was not considered significant due to its location in a remote desert of Idaho. About 1,100 Curies of fission products were released into the atmosphere.<4>
