Citizen has accused the authorities of systematically ignoring the plight of thousands of villagers living near the country's largest nuclear waste processing plant.

Many of them have developed serious illnesses as a result of radiation poisoning in the Chelyabinsk region near the Ural Mountains.

In the village of Musluymovo hundreds of people have succumbed to radiation sickness.

3. That's pretty horrible

Although I bet Rush Limbaugh would find it very amusing.

What's the fucking use of a multi-generational study on radiation poisoning? Do they actually think they're going to learn anything beneficial or even useful from this? Do they expect to come up with a treatment for it? The best treatment I can think of is not exposing people to that shit in the first place.

Hell just called. They're building a new wing on the Dr. Mengele building.

4. #*$(&# - Russia uses it to dump foreign nuclear waste too
http://photoblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/11/22/5512008-russians-in-the-town-of-muslyumovo-suffer-from-long-term-nuclear-contamination

Alik Nuryshev, 20, a local resident suffering from childhood disability, including epilepsy and cerebral palsy, sits in his house in the village of Muslyumovo, Nov. 18, 2010. The village is located on the banks of the Techa River in Russia's Urals, one of the country's most lethal nuclear dumping grounds. The Mayak nuclear complex, located 18 miles from Muslyumovo, currently processes foreign radioactive waste, and it dumped 2.68 billion cubic feet of highly radioactive waste into the river from 1949 to 1956.

6. Not to downplay the danger of radioactivity, I do have to ask...
...how much of the illness is directly atributable to radiation and how much might be due to heavy metal toxicity?

Don't get me wrong it's bad news either way.

But there's a fuck load of hypocrisy in demonising one industrial pollutant above all others, and in doing so for a reason which may have little to do with the manner in that pollutant is doing damage in this case. Moreso, when it is easily demonstrable that many other pollutants have a far greater actual negative impact than radioactives.

Whole towns and their surrounds have been wiped out by mines, asbestos and lead probably leading the pack. Most are just footnotes in history, few attract any great comment at all.

Petrochemical pollution in Africa? Thousands, if not tens of thousands are dying anually and the response from the rest of the world amounts to bugger all despite the best efforts of a noisy few.

Contrast it with the effort spent to detect even the slightest (pico-curie/m3) amount of contamination from Fukushima.

Um, what's the latest story on the tailings spill in the Balkans BTW?
