is about $15 Trillion. The wealthiest 400 Americans are worth $1.5 Trillion (about 10% of the annual GDP of the entire country). After the European Union, only 7 other nations have larger GDPs than these individuals do collectively. Of the World's 100 wealthiest individuals only 30 or so are Americans. The global GDP is about $62 Trillion. The net worth of the world's 1200 billionaires is $4.5 Trillion or about 7% of global GDP, up 25% from last year. 40 million Americans have not health coverage. 9 million are unemployed. The median income in the US is less than $50,000. Global median income is $7000. About a third of the world's people live in absolute poverty (about $2 per day).

10. Discussing the GDP is a good start. But much of a rich person's wealth

or a wealthy corporation's wealth, does not affect the GDP.

For instance, if you buy up an entire Nature Preserve, as Goldman Sachs did recently, and that plush piece of real estate is not even in the USA, but down in Patagonia, that piece of property is very valuable, even though it's contribution to the GDP on an annual basis is nil (Except for the year it is purchased, when the lawyers, and the real estate people get a commission.)

Likewise the property that the rich owns doesn't get reflected in the GDP. They may not even have any money in the bank - it can all be in the form of valuable real estate holdings, mineral holdings, cattle, antiques, jewelry.

And not once meeting a rich person who claimed to be rich, despite the second and third homes, the trips to Cannes for the film awards, the limo service, the servants, (who were often little more than slaves and were paid probably worse than slaves would be, etc) I do feel the need to do the apples to oranges things.

A lot of the very wealthy in Marin own an entire Fortune Five Hundred Company (and in some cases, have shares in others.) Yet they go running to the local Social Services people, attempting to get 24/7 care for the elderly relative for a $ 100 a day. (it is not even legal to pay that amount, state law claims a worker needs at least $ 106 bucks a day.)

I actually had to wait an entire six months for my last four hundred dollar paycheck from one family. the estate went through probate, and none of the millionaires related to the deceased could advance me the money, as "every cent we own is tied up in real estate." (This circa 2001.)

So when I hear the ultra rich saying in our "liberal" media that they certainly cannot afford the four percent more if the Bush tax cuts were ever rescinded, I always think to myself, sell one of your second or third or fourth damn summer homes then.

and you are right.... tax cuts for the rich but the rest of us need to stop being greedy. one thing to consider is this..... corporations and rich folks when they have taxes have ways of avoiding them. they donate to charities and hire more workers and invest in their businesses as a way to pay less taxes. so they have an incentive to invest in this country. also, they benefit from the things that taxes pay for. roads, bridges.... if they have a business, then their employees drive on public roads to get to their jobs. they require the use of public roads to get things to and from their facilities. they benefit from the system yet somehow they should not have to pay into the system is ludicrous.

Your talking about the same thing I've been talking about for years (guess most of us here have).

That douche you're responding to looks like a clueless silver spoon baby. I've lived in extreme wealth AND extreme poverty and now sit in the middle class (disabled from a car accident when a drunk driver rear ended me at 29yrs of age).

I wish I could take the family back to Australia to live because it beats their future here in the US (in Florida at that) even tho my kids are straight A students (2 still in school aged 17 and 7) both bordering on genius yet the most important lessons are sometimes here at home.
They know right from wrong, they know what's happening to your grandmother (and the thousands like her) is wrong and providing health care for all is right (also Australia of course has a very good universal health - my best friend is a nurse there, she would freak out seeing your Gran in that situation! Heck even the right wing in Australia are against cuts to health care even tho many of them pay for their own private insurance they would never want basic universal care taken away and are happy to pay their fair share!)
