'Suicide By Cop' Leads Soldier On Chase Of His Life (MUST WATCH!!) |
|
This is a very moving and emotional story that highlights TWO very important things for me...One there are way too many Veterans like this young man who are suffering from psychological issues after doing multiple tours in combat zones...And WE NEED MORE FEMALE COPS ON THE STREETS!!

...into society with precious little to help them cope.

I am so happy he got a second chance due to a female cop keeping her cool...Unlike the asshole males who had release their testosterone at the end!
Then I got to thinking about all the Vets who did not get that 2nd chance & killed themselves or are in prison!

6. Watching this with a clinical eye...Negotiations take time... |
|
the officers were doing a good job of waiting it out. She did an excellent job of defusing a potentially disastrous situation, and had things under control. Then comes the "hero"w/his taser, something he could have used earlier iin the situation, but waited until the situation became relatively tame and under control. There was absolutely no call for that.
After some 2 hours of discussion toward a resolution by one good Trooper, and suddenly, w/Brock on the ground, the guys, "man up" armed to to the teeth with a suspect on the ground. I think the Trooper deserves acclaim for what she did, and the others should hide their faces in shame After the situation was defused by a single individual...the testosterone got the better of the "tough guys"...when there was virtually no threat at all. I wonder if those guys all went home and combed their pubic hair because they were "so tough...:(

they are an interesting breed.
While I agree that their jobs can be exceptionally hazardous from time to time, it is not a constant rush of adrenaline for an entire shift. Most of the time, these men and women are bored to tears or drowning in paperwork.
In situations like the one we viewed, there is certainly an element of danger, but the discerning individual can size up this situation pretty quickly. If the suspect was going for "suicide by cop", (a very real scenario), he would have come out blasting. In 95% of situations like this, if you can get an individual to at least listen, there is an excellent chance no harm will come to anyone. If you have someone's ear for 2 hours, I would expect things to pan out pretty well.
I could cite numerous situations where law enforcement went over the top, but we all know it happens. This woman did an amazing job, she deserves recognition for saving a life, maybe more than one. I think the others, were fools at best, and downright cowards at worst. No situations are identical, but her perseverance and calm demeanor were the definitive aspect of this situation...I wish her well and hope some others in law enforcement learned something from this.

cowardice of the male.
Will this even be used in deciding policy about tasers and the effectiveness of tasers. That cop was more cowardly than the poor soldier.
What are we doing to our youth?
It was said in the film that he thought someone was out to get him. She talks him down and she feels comfortable enought to move towards him and get him in the car.
What are we doing? What are we doing?

I think that negotiating skills should be taught and mandatory in every law enforcement agency in this country. And that LEOs should be recertified in negotiation every year or two. No certification, no gun. Empathy training might be a good idea for LEOs too.

I am so relieved to see this end the way it did... It brings back all those tears from a few years ago when my dear Brother ate his gun in his bedroom moments before I could get him help.. This was the time during the Bush Regime when Vets benefits were being re classified and Vets with serious mental disorders were re-classed with a pre existing conditions.. Benefits denied.... My Brother too was under this pressure and could not deal with the fact that he was abandoned by his Government after all the time he served... I still pray that these fine Americans get that help and get the recognition they deserve..

that female police officer did a phenomenal job, and I hope she is well recognized for the outstanding job she did. That video should be required viewing for every cop on the job, and every cop in training on how to diffused a similar situation. Obviously every situation is different, but the right person was there, took control, and most importantly of all, never lost her cool or became impatient. Oh, and THANK-YOU NPR for this wonderful story!

The cool headed and calm approach on the part of Trooper Meghan kept at least one person from being killed. And she handled this situation with a mere two years experience. What does that say about women in law enforcement?

24. I heard this story on NPR |
|
Twice today. I am glad the female officer kept her head. She is the only reason that that kid is still among us. I agree that we do need more female officers. And I am glad he appears to be doing much better. We need to treat our veterans better, and get them the help they truly need, and the freaking commanding officers need to do a waaaaaaaaaaaay better job of recognising PTSD and TBI.
However, the first thought I had on listening to it the first time was this:
Ok, your son is back from multiple deployments, obviously disturbed and suicidal. As was mentioned in the piece, your whole family noticed that something was wrong. Your son had his own 9MM. However, Dad, you had an additional FIVE guns, including a semi-automatic, in the home your suicidal son lived in that were NOT LOCKED UP in a gun safe, which is where they belonged, especially in THAT situation. Gee Dad, WTF were you thinking?

for posting this video. The story is even longer and fuller if you go to NPR and find All Things Considered. It ran yesterday, the 22nd of March. Daniel Zwerdling put the story together. He should definitely get an award for it. And that cop is golden. What a great gal. I hope she feels rewarded by the making of this story and video.
Thanks again.

on good authority that there have been 6 suicides at Ft. Hood since the beginning of the year and another young soldier was found dead in his barracks Tuesday (no cause of death given), Our son in Afghanistan teaching about Explosive Devices has put on his Facebook page the names of soldiers - almost children for the most part - killed and their deaths ignored. We have time for Charlie Sheen and other inanities but nothing about the terrible suffering we have imposed on young men and women for political reasons.

33. I now wish someone would present a video of former Cop Trainer & Supervisor analyzing this video |
|
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 10:13 AM by peacetalksforall
and tell us why that guy tazed the soldier. Why why why?
The soldier got the first part of his request - to be taken out. He didn't get his second - in a blaze of glory. He got electric shock by a coward. I don't want to call the cop a coward - we need to hear the supervisor.
I feel sorry when our soldiers get killed - I feel sorry for all of them when they come home.
I would like to see those multi-national ceo's and cfo's sit and watch this endlessly.
When are we going to wake up - those ceo's and stockholders sent that guy out to mess him up.
And our leaders side with the ceo's.
The giants of commerce are supposed to be leaders.
The police chiefs are supposed to be leaders.
Our bankers are supposed to be leaders.
Our owners and editors are supposed to be leaders.
Our representatives are supposed to be representing us.
That's what we were taught and are still teaching.
A grand lie with a mega tons of pretense.
Our leaders are robbing us, killing us, ending us.
There are good leaders. There are just so few of them.
I'm going to send one thank you a day and see how when I run out of the good ones.
Day 1 - today ... I'll send a personal one to Grayson and Feingold.

like they so often do. Clearly this guy needed trapping, but so often a joy ride, or a run red light turns into a death sentence for innocent people killed in the chase.
Kudos here that the cop showed skills to have this turn out like it did. Guns and flight seldom turn out like this.
His family should be rightfully furious that Bush's war destroyed yet another young person.

36. I've always found it interesting that in the U.S. cops shoot |
|
to kill always. Why not instant tranquilizer darts that freeze the limbs shot from a gun instead of constantly murdering people? They use them on animals but not on people? This lady did a great job of helping this wounded vet. The goons at the end are why police are not trusted these days.
