2. Just to clarify
Edited on Sun Mar-27-11 07:12 PM by Lefta Dissenter
The mother is the one who actually ended up receiving the citation. The kids are absolutely great, and they decided to do this after seeing Jeremy Ryan's video at www.DefendingWisconsin.org . Jeremy Ryan and Valerie Walasek have been fighting for our First Amendment rights that the Dept of Administration keeps trying to take away!

The kids had just been at a Leadership weekend through Scouts, and decided that exercising their First Amendment rights was a great way to show leadership.

I had never met the family before today, so I'm just sharing information that they told us today. Editing to add that the family didn't know Jeremy before today, either. This was purely the kids' decision based on what they saw online.

The Capitol Police officer was absolutely torn up over this - you could just see that it pained him to have to issue a citation for this sign. He couldn't have been kinder with the kids and their parents. The kids made up their own minds on this, though, and their parents said that they would support whatever decision the kids made.

Please visit Jeremy's site, and help out if you can! www.DefendingWisconsin.org

4. So many really wonderful, decent people in Wisconsin.
Now if that had been LA or New York? Who knows? (I live in LA.)

When you see how calm and decent people in Wisconsin are, you really wonder why Scott Walker needs to attack their unions. Could it be that he isn't a very decent person? Or, maybe could it be that he isn't very smart and fears being outsmarted by the union representatives?

How could any civic leader have a problem negotiating with people who are so reasonable and understanding and calm? People in Wisconsin seem to be able to resolve any problem without even getting excited.

This video makes the whole situation in Wisconsin all the more puzzling. It certainly substantiates the theory that the Scott Walker administration with its confrontational methods is not following the will of the wonderful people of Wisconsin.

Can't wait until we hear that the Republicans are out of power in Wisconsin and reasonable folks are back in.

5. Really? I think this needs some legal input.... I'm tired
with legality based on personal opinion, and not actual law.

7. hmph!
"The recommended area to protest"!?!?!?!! As in, "Let's keep all those dastardly, uppity protesters sequestered where the press and the politicians don't have to see them!"?????

I agree the officer seemed intent upon diplomacy, but we need the paid lackeys of the vile corporatists to stand WITH us and say NO MORE!

10. Not that I have a say in it,
but I don't think I would want the Capitol Police (particularly the good ones like this one) to put their jobs at risk by refusing to obey Mike Huebsch's orders. Then who would replace them? Bullies who show up with pepper spray and clubs? This battle will be fought in Court (April 8). It's not like he's being asked to mow people down with a tank. The individuals have CHOSEN to receive their citations over this, in ORDER to get into Court and have the stupid rule thrown out as being unconstitutional.

Particularly with some of the cops, it is VERY CLEAR that they would rather do just about ANYTHING than issue these citations, and, at least in the case of Valerie and Jeremy, they have made it clear that they want the citations issued in order to get this moving into Court.

If you haven't, go watch Jeremy's videos, and if you feel strongly about what he and Valerie are doing, donate to their legal defense fund. No, they don't have an attorney yet. www.defendingwisconsin.org

9. Wonder if his badge number is taped over....
Or if it is a morning sign? Gee he is a polite officer though. Too bad it is an ass hat rule from an ass hat governor .

11. All the badges
are behind an elastic band (I'm assuming pinned on, too). It probably helps to keep them from getting snagged or yanked off in some lines of duty that might be more physical than this assignment.

15. He is with....
the UTMB PD (Texas-Med). These baby docs are a dangerous group: illegal parking, locking themselves out of their cars, letting them in the building at all hours, escorting staff to their cars, and writing the odd traffic ticket.

He does duty at the Psych Center too though, which is rough sometimes, esp if the folks are off their medicines. He is polite and has worked at the State School for the Mentally Handicapped for years so he can handle an unstable person fairly well.

16. Hey, send him up here to WI
He can work with the Republican Legislators and Gov Walker. Plenty of unstable people there! :hi:

and yeah, I just meant that all of the WI State Capitol Police seem to have their badges tucked behind the black elastic band. State Patrol and other agencies don't necessarily.

17. He is pretty good at...
restraining the most violent. He actually is sympathic to the mentally handicapped. I don't think he can muster much sympathy for the tea bagging nut jobs in any capitol building, but he can restrain them.

18. Dad: "The Constitution trumps administrative code."
Thanks for posting the longer vid, it was definitely worth the watch. What fantastic parents these kids have. I think the police officer knew he was stuck enforcing a bad rule; he seemed so pained. Everybody was calm and polite, and I loved the applause at the end. It illustrates how silly it is to try to stifle peaceful dissent. It's the rule-mongers who end up looking like brats.

Too late to rec, but I'll kick.
