Jerry Sanders, the Republican Mayor of San Diego, holds a press conference to stay why he signed a resolution in support of gay marriage passed by the city council, despite campaigning in support of civil unions two years ago. He becomes very emotional, saying he couldn't look his own daughter (who is a lesbian) nor gay members of his staff in their faces if he vetoed the resolution, implying he thought their pursuit of love was less meaningful than his and his wifes'.

If only more Republicans would have the courage to stand up against bigotry and hatred like Mayor Sanders, we'd be a lot more advanced in our way of thinking and life. I don't know much about Mayor Sanders being as I'm from NJ, but this definitely was heartfelt and I applaud him for the courage to stand up for his daughter, staff members, and all gay and lesbian people of San Diego.

1. HE COULDN'T LOOK---
Go Jerry (who wants to bend over and have the gay vote drive him home)....

He couldn't look at the members of his staff?
He couldn't look at the gay staff of the members of his office?
He couldn't look at the stiff staffs of his gay members?
He couldn't look at the gay members of his staff's faces?
He wanted to set his daughter up with Dick's daughter for an afternoon of Tea and Carpets?
He wanted to get a log from the log cabin wing of his party?
He wanted to ride the log jammer with Senator Craig?

COURAGE?

That would be for him to quit the f$&%^* GOP and join a party who cares about their country...

I guess if he had young kids he would be against No Child Left Behind?
I guess he'll come out against the new Medicare bullshit when his mom is on Medicare?
I guess he'll be against the war when he has a draftable kid in the fight?

TOO BAD HE DOESN'T HAVE AS MUCH BALLS AS HIS DAUGHTER

2. What the hell is your freaky problem?
Jerry Saunders is a Republican & I didn't vote for him but his stand on this issue took some courage and probably lost
him some of his party's votes (he's up for reelection) to that other Republican twerp in the race Steve Francis who's
already taking his homophobic agenda to various Conservative groups that might have given Saunders a nod. I sure wish
a Democrat would get into this race. At any rate give Jerry a little credit. Its not often that a Republican takes the
right position on this issue.

3. Well there's something you don't see every day
A Republican with something that almost seems like a conscience. For a second there, it almost seemed like he was feeling empathy.

Never mind the fact that he has been an active member of a party that has been systematically persecuting people.

I certainly welcome his change of heart, no matter how it came to him, and I believe that it is genuine. It is a shame that conservatives are so narrow minded that they only seem capable of understanding these things when they experience it directly. His change was motivated because his daughter and staff members were affected. That is just like Nancy Reagan, who only took a principled stand on stem cells after her husband was struck by Alzheimer's.

Welcome to the human race, Mayor Sanders. We are glad you are with us and we will not hold any grudges. But we do expect you to work to elevate some of your fellow conservatives to the most basic level of human being.

7. Maybe this will encourage Dems to follow...
Oh nevermind. It's too much to expect many of them to take courageous stands. Kudos to this guy.

5. Jerry Sanders is awesome
I was moved to hear a politician finally say what I have been saying, and the things that so many of us have been saying. Because homosexuality is a minority orientation, and because so many are in the closet, one doesn't hear the arguments so often.

It is so great to have a politician do what is right against the grain of his party. Having a lesbian daughter helps, but I still appreciate the courage of his stance; it is clear that it really took something for him to say all he did.

It is not acceptable to have separate but "equal" rights and privileges. All citizens deserve equal treatment under the law.

6. Thanks also to his daughter, his staff members, and all those who
helped Sanders listen to his heart.
