1. Yes, happy 80th Ghorbachev
With the collapse of the "communist" regime, there was no longer a "communist" scare from neighboring countries - and that helped paved the way for the end of Apartheid.

2. Gorbachev is evidence of how leaders who stick to their principles can change the world.
He stuck to his principles of openness and restructuring even when it meant the collapse of the USSR, and I am 100% convinced when everything is tallied maybe 50 or 100 years from now it will be clear he did the absolutely best thing for the people of Russia and the world.

4. But, but Ronald Reagan won the Cold War! Every good Republican knows Gorbachev was irrelevant.
He was just following St. Ronnie's orders. Gorbachev is just a footnote in the glorious history of Reagan's triumph.

Never mind that the Soviet Union was still going strong when Reagan left office. Never mind that a coup attempt in 1991 by hardliners provoked the retaliation from Gorbachev that shattered the power of the Communist Party, none of which had anything to do with Reagan. Never mind that Reagan resisted Gorbachev's efforts and did less to support changes in the Soviet block than the Pope did, or any Western European leader. That's fact-based history. When will you learn that Republicans never listen to fact-based anything?

5.  Gorbachev could have killed thousands by bringing in the army...
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 09:31 AM by Stuart G
to prevent the change, instead he facilitated change....

So instead of killing,
he decided not to kill.....he wanted change..

He was responsible, for change...no one else..
He is as much a peace maker, as anyone ever has been..
