3. I thought it was the other way around....
Ed made alot of sense about Libya and Schaill was intellectually dishonest, especially about Gittmo....I know I know, many DUers expect Obama to close down Gittmo with his own money (since congress won't fund it and also agree to hold the detainees trials here)....It's all Obama's fault, all the fucking time here at DU!

I always tell my kids that hate is a bad thing because you immediately lose your objectivetivity about that person....so many libers have this irrational and passionate hatred fot Obama (basically because he has not made all the changes in 2 years that he said he would over a 4 year period and that it's Obama's fault for a very broken congress) that they cannot be ratiuonal anymore...Schaill is definitely one of these people (he reminds me of many DUers).

24. I didn't title the video. The person who uploaded it to youtube did.
I didn't really think the title was accurate. I thought they both made a decent case. Now, I do think your comment "Gaddafi kid" is McCarthyite to the core. You say that anyone who opposes the war against Libya is a "Gaddafi kid?" I'm a "Gaddafi kid" too then, and proud of it.

28. I wouldn't call him the 'Ghaddafi Kid,' but . . .
He certainly scoffs at the Libyan opposition. Last week on Bill Maher's show he was prompted with something like 'we're supporting the rebels' and his response was 'all one thousand of them.'

33. I don't know. That's what US intelligence says.
There are more opposition people with weapons in hand than 1,000; but there may indeed be only 1,000 with adequate skills to serve as excellent fighters. 1,000 is more than enough to wage an insurgency or hold a few cities in the Libyan context. Either way, even scoffing at the opposition does not mean supporting Gaddafi.

Now, if we criticize Obama, we are "Obama haters". What a fucking pant-load. I don't hate him, but he is a huge disappointment. Every day, there is some new outrage perpetrated by this totally clueless administration.

Fail!

but please base it on facts and not hyperspeculation and lies....

Yes, Obama is a dissappointment ------------> www.whatthefuckhasobamadonesofar.com

I don't think any dem president could have done any better than Obama for the first 2 years....it's easy for all of us and many dem congressman to talk it up and say what Obama should have done but they were not in the hot seat fighting:

1. Repubs in congress out to destroy Obama
2. 24/7 fillubusters
3. DINOs who voted lock in step with the hateful repubs
4. An entire major cable network out to destroy Obama every step of the way
5. Many spineless dems in congress

And to get done what he did in just 2 years is HOSTROICAL to say the least....

6. Really, because Ed was using a lot of circular logic and chest pumping.
By Ed's logic of americans have died so let's bomb the shit out of them, we should have bombed israel multiple times over the years.

I agree with Schaill, we're doing nothing but arming people who, and I bet you hands down, will do the same thing their dictator is doing to them. They'll drag opposition families out of their homes and shoot them. That's what we are arming. We've done it tens if not hundreds of times in Africa, and we'll keep on doing it.

26. Which bill was this?
The National Defense Authorization Act? The Gitmo fund-blocking aspect was only part of that. It also included several other things, including programs to protect troops in Afghanistan, and making sure that soldiers get paid. He could have vetoed it, but that would have been political suicide - headlines and ads would proclaim 'Obama Vetoes Solider Pay' and would completely ignore the Gitmo aspect.

How much every day dissent with Iran or Afghanistan do we see at DU every day?

Almost nil? Why? And why have Dems been refunding these wars since '06?

Even if you believe 9/11, it was used as farce to get into Iraq -- no way anyone

at DU or any Dem should be supporting that war. And, certainly you don't attack

and destroy an entire country like Afghanistan simply because SOME of the people

were terrorists!! So all of that is nonsense --

As for Libya -- one day we ourselves may be involved in such an uprising and we might

forsee that our own MIC could be in the hands of a dictator. Who will intervene for us?

This is simply an uprising of the Libyan citizens against a dictator who has been in

power 40+ years! They want him to go. Kaddafi plans to stay by killing them all --

if you have doubts of that read what he has already done -- planting landmines against

his own citizens? Bombing them? The protesters are involved in a political movement to

oust him -- but they face not just Kaddafi's insanities but the fact that the UK, the

French and the Russians have armed him to the teeth!

As we've just heard on BBC News, this is a different situation from Egypt simply because

Kaddafi cannot be dislodged by diplomatic means -- that's the misfortune here!

Kaddafi has brought in 50,000 and more mercenaries from Chad and many other countries paying

them $2,000 per day, each. Chad continues to also supply and resupplying Kaddafi with weapons.

Granted -- any mission can become distorted by the right wing -- however, the Libyan

protesters asked for this intervention - a NFZ with "no soldiers on the ground."

2,000 marines went in and are serving AT SEA -- 100 miles off the coast as a support for

the operation.

The protesters also ousted some British intelligence caught disembarking -- and returned them

to UK. They came without asking and the Council refused to see them.

Council, however, did agree to CIA's requests to speak with them -- that's why they're there.

19. If an American President ever makes a military-related decision that works
out well for the people for whom it was designed to help (as in this case, the Libyan Freedom Fighters), will we recognize that or decry it as more American jingo militarism?

I've been a very outspoken critic of President Obama, especially on his handling of the Afghanistan War, but I'm giving him a chance on this one. If it turns out that he has been feeding us a line of bullshit then I'll admit that I was wrong. Until then, it's fine with me if the U.S. participates in a military action that keeps safe the people who are trying to overthrow Ghadafi.

32. You know, after almost 10 years into our country's longest war
which was due to a massive blowback to some of our military involvements during the 70s and 80s, coupled with the unmitigated disaster which has been Iraq. A place where orders of magnitude more of those precious (now) innocent brown people have been killed due to our actions than Gaddafi could ever dream to get away with. And let's not forget our country's other "military-related" decision like the Contras, Vietnam, etc, etc, etc. One would assume that people would be a tad more "cautious" when giving the benefit of the doubt to another "military-related" decision. Alas...

35. Ed was wrong to use the claim of Obama that an American
life has been lost in Libya.
One, deaths happen in war.
Two, he couldnn't name the death.
Three, this is the Vietnam war approach to making decisions about killing thousands and thousands of people and destroying the infrastructure and much of the culture of a nation. Again and again a nation that has not attacked the US.

Every American military life lost in Vietnam, and there were hundreds of Americans involved in that civil war from its earliest moments in the late 40's and early 50's; GI's were everywhere after WWII; every US life lost was and opportunity/excuse to become more involved so that the lost life was not "lost in vain."

It's classic red shirt war mongering. That's what Schultz was doing and it's wrong. Not only because it is vainglorious, it leads to wider exposure of American lives, and it is the same logic that rebels and terrorists use to justify attacking us. The US military has a big deficit of paybacks built up. So maybe we should just shut up about killing thousands as a mafia style revenge. and think about what the cost to us in lives and dollars will be relative to the gain.
