This is an excerpt of John Edwards' speech to the NEA in July. Edwards recently rolled out his education plan:

1. NCLB tests
Edwards is spot on. It is a waste to teach to the test and have children repeatedly take a test that essentially only measures rote memory skills. As he has said, NCLB needs to be gutted and totally overhauled.

2. You don't make a hog fatter by weighing it!
As teachers, we realize measuring achievement is essential for gauging students' progress - and assessing our teaching skills - but the NCLB Act focus on pencil and paper testing testing testing is ridiculous!
