This week Republicans unveiled a budget proposal for 2012 that cuts more than $5.8 trillion in government spending over the next decade. Democracy Now! interviews Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who addresses the growing class divide taking place in the United States and inequality in a new Vanity Fair article titled, "Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%."

Stiglitz is a professor at Columbia University and author of numerous books, most recently, "Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy."

"It's not just that the people at the top are getting richer," Stiglitz says. "Actually, they're gaining, and everybody else is decreasing... And right now, we are worse than Old Europe."

3. WORSE: we have a gov by the 1% AGAINST the 99%
the goal of the right wing is not simply to enrich the rich, that would make no sense because what they do will harm the rich too on the long run. What they want is EXACTLY what all http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Open_Society_and_Its_Enemies">historicists since Plato and Aristotle who believed in the historic mission and inevitability of eliminating their political and class enemies. For the communists that was the bourgeoisie, so they got rid of the private sector not because they thought that will benefit the economy or the working class but because they saw it as the economic foundation of their arch nemesis. For the republicans the arch enemy is the middle class supported by a strong public sector. They are dismantling the middle class regardless of the economic costs or benefits to themselves or the rich.
