After speaking at Macalester College on Wednesday night, award-winning journalist Chris Hedges was asked about the FBI's role in the recent targeting of peace activists in the Twin Cities and elsewhere in the Midwest. Nine had their homes searched and were issued subpoenas to appear before a Grand Jury in Chicago. Hedges offered a pessimistic view that the FBI is merely the "jackboot" extension of the ongoing attack on civil liberties. He was also asked about the role of citizen journalists. He'd previously stated, "All journalists should belong to a union and be well-paid." He sees serious issues with the current state of journalism.

2. Well, the first part clearly
implies a Police State. The second part about journalists reveals the detrimental impact that corporate monoculture has on a society.

Hedges has some good insight and I think his criticisms and reporting is valid. I'm glad to hear him speak boldly about issues that are edited-out of the mainstream.

3. 'at our core, we won't pay for beauty or truth' WOW, that is statement of the year
Sums up the caustic effects on civil life under the relentless, grinding commoditizing effects of a noxiously corrupt oligarchic capitalist system.

6. I totally agree with him regarding Huffington Post. It is one thing
if you have a group of journalists publishing as a sort of cooperative -- all for one and one for all. It's quite another thing for a person like Arianna Huffington to build a website on the free submissions of respected journalists and others and then sell the website for what would be a huge amount of money to those journalists and others.

I won't visit Huffington Post any more.

9. The Future of Journalism: Nonprofit?
Richard Tofel of ProPublica, discusses the future of nonprofit journalism in America and its dependence on philanthropic support. "Certain kinds of journalism are public goods, they're going to need to be funded as public goods," argues Tofel.

11. there is a difference between "public" and "philanthropy"
Philanthropy is in essence public relations: the rich selling to the public that in fact they are compassionate human beings too, which they are most certainly not. "Public" on the other hand means: 100% funded by taxpayers which is a legitimate way of funding journalism. That's why BBC and CBC is superior journalism to anything the CPB is putting out through NPR which is funded by private charities and rich family foundations.
