I can't see any statistical evidence that there has been any change in tornado frequency in 60 years. For instance, the record number of tornadoes for the month of April is 40..in 1957.

That said, we should certainly realize the danger of crumbling infrastructure including nuclear plants as it relates to natural disasters.

About a month ago, he said we are tracking pretty close with the 1975 weather season, which had a LOT of early season tornados (April-May), when you would expect them a bit later in the season. His comment was that we should see something similar this year. Kind of intersting to see them right for once. Now, maybe he just got lucky (I certainly don't know).

Hotter air simply means that the molecules in the air are jumbling around with greater energy. More warming = more energy. More energy = more storms and more violent ones too. Warmer air also holds more water vapor so when it rains, it pours.

'Level 7' is pretty much arbitrary unit of measurement. Things will have to go VERY WRONG INDEED from this point forward for the Fukushima reactor complex to release as much radiation as Chernobyl did. And that's using even the newest, higher numbers from the Japanese Government, and 'admissions' from TEPCO.

It's as useful as saying Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Camille were "officially they are now the same" because they were both category 5 hurricanes and ignoring the difference in wind speeds (over 25mph sustained), and five-fold difference in loss of life.

(Andrew was also costlier, because of where it hit, not because it was more powerful)

Discriminating between them is a limitation of the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale, as discriminating between Fukushima and Chernobyl is a limitation of the International Nuclear Event Scale.


Nuclear experts say Fukushima will go down in history as the second-worst nuclear accident ever. Not as bad as Chernobyl in the Ukraine but definitely much worse than Three Mile Island in the United States.

"Fukushima is not the worst nuclear accident ever but it is the most complicated and the most dramatic," said James Acton, Associate of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.


THAT is a statement I will agree with. Fukushima is certainly more complex, as only reactor 3 at Chernobyl was further involved in the accident with Reactor 4, as part of the building caught fire after the Reactor 4 explosion.
