No argument with the M-16/M-4 family of weaponry being "jam prone" they are finicky weapons, but the AK family of weapons have NOT, been updated like that movie leads you to believe, the big change with them from the early AK-47's to the current AK-74 is mainly CALIBER. The Soviets when to a SMALLER ammunition caliber.
Also, the idea that just because a weapon is old, it is somehow "not as good as new computer designed firearms" That is just false right on its face.
Let me point out, that the .50 Caliber Machine gun the military uses, and uses to this day, we first fielded in the 1910's!! The side arm I trust with mine, and my family's life, is of a design that was first issued to the US Army in 1911. And by nearly ALL, categories it is a better sidearm than what replaced it.
It is my learned opinion, the AK47 is a better weapon than our M-4, it is NOT prone to jamming, and it fires a .30 caliber round. They will even fire, with the action full of sand.
EDIT, the M-16's transformation to the M4 was FAR MORE encompassing than the AK-47/AKM transformation to the AK-74..FAR MORE, The AK-47 first intered service in 1947. That "puppy" is over 50, and IMHO is STILL the most effective combat rifle EVER.

2. and the army stopped development of the XM-8 |

the prototypes of this new rifle jammed an average of 1 in 16,000 shots, in extreme conditions. But because it relied heavily on German company Heckler & Koch parts, American manufacturers have been fighting to kill the program off.
It speaks volumes that when the M-16 saw combat action in Vietnam in 1965, soldiers were tossing them aside to use the replaced M-14, which itself was just an upgraded version of the old World War II rifle, the M-1.
Just an example of the military-industrial complex at its worst.
