They've been absolutely unafraid of any consequences because there's been no enforcement of federal wiretap laws since 2001 for politically-connected entities, particularly those with US or foreign gov't intel contracts. The shadowy world of the spook- corporation is seemingly immune from investigation.

It's a mutation of the national security and counter-terrorism rubric that gives anyone with connections a Get Out of Jail Free Card. They can pretty much wiretap whomever the hell they want. Look at Spitzer - he's a good example of someone who was targeted for political reasons by IC contractors working for Wall Street investment houses, and then federal agencies got into the act.

3. I wouldn't be surprised if this scandal was just the tip of the iceberg

If these were tactics that were used for a tabloid newspaper that was only modestly profitable, I wonder what kind of tactics were used here in the U.S. that we don't know about.
