The Grand Rapids, Michigan Murders: Could They Have Been Prevented?

Looking at a list of mass murderers, we see the obvious - many of them had prior convictions and crimes on their record. Even more frightening, some of them had already been to jail and released early. (Recidivism is a big word for this)

This applies to the tragic murders of yesterday in Grand Rapids. Was Rodrick Dantzler given an easy ride with his criminal history? How do we curb these kinds of crimes? I give my ideas.

1. Spree killers are not easily identified and not all have a criminal background.

Usually those closest to the suspect are the best source of information about their stability. However they often easily deceive people. Their internal dialogue is exacerbated by the use of drugs and alcohol, both of which this guy did on the day of the murders.

2. I think we have a manipulative justice system.

And your reaction is exactly what they try to create by letting these people that they know will commit ever increasing violent crime "slip through the cracks"
Just like any business it sells security and you sell more security when there is fear than when there is not so much fear....fear is the objective here and your outrage the payoff.
