"I'm gonna play ping-pong now." Would that millions of 'adults' in this country were so accepting of others.

if only it were so easy for adults and they could treat it so nonchalantly.

2. Kids typically don't see "color" either
They have to be taught to notice.

3. Yep...
Kids are taught a lot of weird things by their parents.

What's cool is when your kid is confused over another child's bigotry... or when your kid literally LOLs when they see the stupidity that is bigotry. When that happens to a parent, they know they did something right.

30. Mine didn't laugh - he cried. The middle one of my three sons
was home sick from school and in about third grade. I came into the living room to find him sobbing on the couch. I asked him what was wrong and he said, "those people on Jerry Springer hate their own brother and won't even talk to him or invite him for holidays just because he married someone whose skin is a different color!" Why the kid had turned on Jerry Springer, I have no idea. He was nearly inconsolable at the very thought that there are people who hate others because they don't look exactly the same as we do.

Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 09:48 AM by AlbertCat
Actually, it's been shown that kids get most their info from their peers and their environment and their genes. Parents and home life (unless really weird in some way) has the lest amount of influence. Less than genes. This is clearly illustrated by the act that children born to immigrants have the accent of their new home, not their parent's accent.

Integrating schools and seeing all kinds of folks on the TV seems to be more important than parents.

36. I didn't see color either. I got yelled at by a white teacher for giving part of my easter eggs to
a girl who happened to be black, because she was crying due to being large and slow for her age. I collected the most out of all the 1st graders, and when I saw her crying, I gave her a handful. The teacher gave me a scowled look and said, well you didn't collect the most because you gave some away, and gave a huge basket prize to another boy. That's okay with me, I got ethics hater! LOL

That explains all too much. And before anyone gets on me for bashing east Texas, I lived in Texas for 20 years and only 4 of them in the only reasonable place in that horrid state - Austin.

42. That is so true.
My twins who are 4 years old and Chinese were playing at the playground when all of a sudden a little colored girl about the same age started to follow them around. I thought my kids would recoil at seeing someone different than they were and would hesitate to play with her; but to my astonishment the kids started playing with each other as if they were best friends: laughing, climbing, holding hands to help each other up the slide. No indication that race or skin color even came into consideration. I learned something that day.

4. "You can play if you want to."
That kid's parents should be so proud! Confronted with a situation he had never seen before, the kid notices the differences, says I'm gonna play now, and you can come and play ping pong, too.

Made my day!

6. Reminds me
of a post I read about a kid back during the Proposition 8 battle. The dad was driving his son to school and the kid was trying to understand what the fight was all about. He thought he was against gay marriage because he thought it meant he'd have to marry a boy. He had a crush on a girl in his kindergarten class and told his dad, "But I want to marry a girl like Katie." His dad told him that would be fine and he could do that if he wanted to, because the fight was over who other people could marry.

Five-year-old kid: "That's it? Why would anyone care who OTHER people marry?"

Exactly.

57. lol...
I am in the bible belt, and work with plenty of "fine upstanding" christians. They tell me every day how the sanctity of marriage is now ruined thanks to NY- of course, 75% of them are on at least their second marriage. I am a straight man who thinks all should have the basic civil right of being married, and have been married to a woman for 17 years, through good times and bad. Who am I to say who can and cannot love each other. Only two people can ruin the "sanctity" of my marriage- me or my wife.

15. Loverly .... fantastic reaction -- !!
Obviously he was slightly slowed down by the fact that no one had pointed

this out to him before -- didn't see it around him -- no one mentioned it --

but loved how he thinks it over and gets to what he does know about marriage --

the couple loves one another!!

Bright and adorable little boy --

I'd like to think it's where we would all be on this issue if we hadn't been

taught by our culture to hate --

35. lulls probably more than anything. he'd never known what a gay couple was before this, so he had to
get his thoughts in his mind. He said, 'that's funny' which is cute, because to him it was unique and different, and he realized it's his first "husbands and husbands"... just a great vid!

25. The song, "You've got to be carefully taught," from South Pacific is as relevant today as ever
You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

The bigots know deep down inside that no matter how many piddly battles they win against homosexuals, they can't win the war. They are dying off. And very few of the children are taking up their nonsense.
