Deputy Attorney General David Ogden resigned in December of 2009, a decision “prompted by a combination of professional and family reasons.” In an article published in the Wall Street Journal on December 3 of that same year, Evan Perez wrote that Ogden “hasn’t been identified with any major Justice Department policy initiatives.” Recent circulation of a C-SPAN video from March 24, 2009 invalidates that statement.

The video’s message is critical: Project Gunrunner (Fast and Furious) was launched under the orders of President Barack Obama with the knowledge of Attorney General Eric Holder. Project Gunrunner has now resulted in up to 2,000 U.S. semi-automatic assault rifles ending up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels. News of Project Gunrunner broke out after the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee requested agency presence concerning the operation, which led to ATF agents’ disclosing of their orders to monitor the illegal trafficking of U.S. firearms to Mexico without taking action. Subsequently, the Justice Department has denied any previous knowledge of the operation’s existence. The video indicates direct involvement from both the Justice Department and President Barack Obama.

Ogden begins the video by admitting, “The president has directed us to take action to fight these cartels and Attorney General Holder and I are taking several new and aggressive steps as part of the Administration’s comprehensive plan.”

The rest of the plan Ogden outlined in his words –

* DOJ’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is increasing its efforts by adding 37 new employees in three new offices, using $10 million in Recovery Act funds and redeploying 100 personnel to the Southwest border in the next 45 days to fortify its Project Gunrunner which is aimed at disrupting arms trafficking between the United States and Mexico.

* ATF is doubling its presence in Mexico itself, from five to nine personnel working with the Mexicans, specifically to facilitate gun-tracing activity which targets the illegal weapons and their sources in the United States.

Border: A 2-year-old video shows a high Justice official saying "the president has directed us," including the attorney general, to speed up Project Gunrunner and the offshoot that got a border agent killed.

This tape has no 18-minute gap, and while it does not feature the president himself, the March 24, 2009, video may rival the tape that turned a "third-rate burglary" into a presidential resignation. No one died at Watergate. Agent Brian Terry lost his life in the administration's obsessive pursuit of gun control.

In addition to Agent Terry, Immigration Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata was also killed in a separate incident by a weapon allowed to "walk" into Mexico from the U.S. as part of the administration's third-rate alleged attempt to track and catch gun traffickers.

The video shows Deputy Attorney General David Ogden, who would resign nine months later after less than a year's service, telling reporters at a Department of Justice briefing of major policy initiatives to fight the Mexican drug cartels.

Just after 10:00 a.m. on March 23rd, 1973, John Dean, White House counsel to former President Richard M. Nixon advised Nixon of “a cancer within-close to the presidency, that’s growing. It’s growing daily.” Within the same breath, he advised Nixon that “people are going to start perjuring themselves very quickly that have not had to perjure themselves to protect other people and the like.” That cancer became known as “Watergate,” and eventually led to Nixon’s resignation.

Nearly forty years later, another “scandal,” exponentially larger than Watergate, has the potential to bring down the occupant of the oval office along with other high ranking officials. While no one was murdered as a result of Watergate, two law enforcement officers are dead because of the current “scandal” that is leading closer and closer to the highest levels of the Obama administration, including the Department of Justice and the U.S. State Department.

Obama’s “war on guns”

After taking office, Barack Hussein Obama began a coordinated effort with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to control the purchases and ownership of guns in the United States. To justify the implementation of tougher gun control laws and in a direct assault on the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, this administration cited a statement made to Congress by William Hoover, Assistant Director for Field Operations for the BATFE on February 7, 2008. According to that report, 90 percent of the weapons used by the Mexican drug cartels were purchased from or originated from the U.S

Reporting from Washington—

Believing that the Operation Fast and Furious scandal reaches into the highest levels of the Justice Department, congressional Republicans asked the attorney general's office to turn over a sweeping trove of emails, documents and other material to determine Washington's role in the "reckless" operation that allowed U.S. semiautomatic weapons to flow to Mexican drug cartels.

"As our investigation into Operation Fast and Furious has progressed, we have learned that senior officials at the Department of Justice, including Senate-confirmed political appointees, were unquestionably aware of the implementation of this reckless program," they said in a letter to Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. made public Tuesday. "Therefore, it is necessary to review communications between and among these senior officials."

The investigation is led by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Sen. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The request for carte blanche access to "emails, memoranda, briefing papers and handwritten notes" could spark a political and legal fight over what, if anything, will be turned over.

A top Justice Department spokesperson, who asked not to be identified because of the ongoing investigation, declined to say how the Obama administration would respond, other than, "We will review their request."

Add lying to Congress about his Justice Department's "Operation Fast and Furious" scandal to the reasons why Eric Holder must be fired as U.S. attorney general.

The idiocy of Fast and Furious -- an attempt by Justice's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to link illegally sold guns with Mexican drug cartels -- became gravely clear when two such rifles were found at the scene of a Border Patrol agent's December murder.

Mr. Holder mentioned Fast and Furious essentials at an anti-arms-smuggling symposium in Mexico in April 2009. Last September, a Justice document referenced such efforts -- which received a quarter of the Obama stimulus package's special law-enforcement appropriations, followed by even more funding from the administration.

Yet Holder testified on May 3 before the House Judiciary Committee that he'd "probably" learned of Fast and Furious in "the last few weeks" -- a dishonest reply to questioning by U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif. The congressman has been doggedly pursuing Fast and Furious truth through the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which he chairs.

An attorney general who perjures himself before Congress has no business being America's chief law enforcement officer.

Operation Fast and Furious is a growing scandal. Attorney General Eric Holder must go, but Congress should not stop investigating there, and ask if Democratic operatives knew anything.
Fast and Furious is the latest variation of the ATF's Operation Gunrunner (aka Gunwalker), allowing U.S. guns into Mexico. It's a disaster involving more than 2,000 guns, many now being used in crimes, and one used to kill a federal agent.

Despite Holder claiming to have only recently learned about Fast and Furious, BigGovernment.com found a 2009 speech wherein Holder bragged about Gunrunner.

In "The Bourne Identity," Jason Bourne is a secret assassin for Operation Treadstone. When Treadstone became a liability, the government terminated it, simultaneously launching Operation Black Briar. Same people, objectives and tactics. Same operation, different name.

The only way Holder didn't lie to Congress is if he's parsing with Bourne-style doublespeak. "Oh, I meant Fast and Furious, not Gunrunner." It's a distinction without a difference.

A July 5 letter from House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa says that Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives leadership has been "muzzled while the DOJ sent over false denials ... obstruct our investigation."

Few recognize the name Ken Melson, the acting ATF director currently offered up for blame as a sacrificial lamb. But many know the name Eric Holder, whose resignation as attorney general would weaken President Obama.

6. I also have a problem with some of your sources
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 04:57 AM by Syrinx
Richard Mellon Scaife owns the Pittsburgh "paper" you quote.

The Washington Examiner is owned by right-wing billionaire Philip Anschutz.

The Tucson Sentinel is a sketchy, online-only publication, with rather mysterious roots.

And I think that the LA Times, once a respectable newspaper, is now owned by another right-wing billionaire, Sam Zell.

Isn't "canada free press" one of those sites that freepers love?

And nowadays, isn't the San Fran Examiner just a fish wrapper that is shoved into people's mailboxes whether they want it or not?

On the whole, not great sources.

I doubt you're even Swedish. :)

10. as for the sources, you're free to parse them, as for not being Swedish, jag skitar i vad du säger
My point is that this is gaining traction, and needs to be dealt with. Of course the right-leaners are going to jump on this first. The key is to stop the bleeding before it spills over into the swing voters.

btw, I lived in New York for 3 plus years, have dated a few Americans, and your news (as well as USA programmes in non-news genres) is very much focused upon here, so I am very familiar with the US.

And I don't care what you say either.

I can use google too.

Don't get me wrong. I think Eric Holder has been a disgrace as Attorney General. He has not prosecuted one Wall Street criminal that caused the financial collapse. Not one. Yet he has found the resources to chase hippies and imprison people for their choice of medicine.

Eric Holder sucks. He's a dick, and a front-man for corporate America. But the issue you choose to raise is, as far as I can tell, bogus.

But I have to question the life choices that some people have made. Those people that pretend to be people that they are not. Staying up late at night, or getting up very early, to spread false stories, published by very dubious sources.

All in an attempt to swing public opinion in a very small way.

That is just kind of sad. I'm sorry.

you all the best. The main point of the whole post was the video, and how Obama's enemies will try to make a meal out of it.

cheers

4. The only sites that note the potential involvement of the
President appear to be very right wing so that slant should be expected and not necessarily true although your header has positively giddy overtones at the prospect! As far as Holder is concerned I guess we will have to wait and see.

7. uh, projecting a little? the video itself is Deputy Attrny General Ogden (Clinton & Obama appointee)
stating .......“The president has directed us to take action to fight these cartels and Attorney General Holder and I are taking several new and aggressive steps as part of the Administration’s comprehensive plan.”

As for right-wing sources, I would hardly characterize USA Election News, the LA Times, CBS News, the Washington Examiner, the Pittsburgh Tribune, the Tuscon Sentinel, and the San Francisco Examiner as fitting in that category. In regards to Investors Business Daily, they defo do lean to right, and the Canadian Free Press is more libertarian in bent, but of course you are going to have the center-right and their ilk immediately making hay of this.

17. Remember, guys.. F&F != Project Gunrunner
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 10:20 PM by X_Digger
F&F is a subset of PG. Knowledge of one does not mean knowledge of the other. It would be akin to saying that a congressman knows about every Department of Defense secret project because he talked about funding the DoD.

More evidence may come out implicating others further up the DOJ chain-of-command, but this isn't the smoking gun (pun intended) that you think it is. There is at least one warrant for wiretap surveillance with a DoJ attorney signature on it. We'll know more as the investigation unfolds.
