People lined up Thursday morning to apply for Dallas County Section 8 housing vouchers. Dallas County sheriff's spokesman Kim Leach estimated the crowd at about 5,000.

The federally-subsidized vouchers pay a portion of the rent, based on household income.

This is the first time in five years that the Dallas County waiting list for vouchers has been open.

Health officials said they processed 4,000 to 5,000 applicants on Thursday morning, adding that as many as 15,000 could ask to be put on a list with only 3,800 vouchers available over the next few years.

1. Dallas Housing
Speaks to the times. However, there is a better way to run the waiting list. Keep it open so that anyone can apply at any time. Then periodically purge the list. This avoids the stampede.

2. Agreed
“A lot of times people are shocked there are so many people who are low income and need assistance,” Thompson said. “That’s just the reality of the economy we are living in.”

4. Um-hmmm...
This way, we get pictures of desperate people doing desperate things. Casts a kind of lawless-ness shadow on the images of people scrambling. Forgive my cynicism, but feels somewhat intentional. Your idea seems firmly sane.

3. Mostly young people. Vouchers are short almost everywhere. They
do not give out enough of them. I live in a small rural community and there is a 3+ year waiting list. Every community could take care of their homeless people if there were more rent vouchers.
