1. The definition of "cuts" is still too high-level to know exactly what the Dems lost for in '94. nt

3. Many of the Budget Hawks do not believe Healthcare is the
responsibility of the Government.

This is what the whole fight is about. The size of Government.
Conservatives do not believe it is the Governments responsibilty
to provide SS Medicare Medicaid.

We never get out really fight over what is at the core.

WE NEED to FIRST DECIDE--the role of government. Then
depending on that result the size and scope.

10. yes, he seems to be rebranding himself when he's definitely a DLC-type Dem
Mainly I don't see why we should be cowed into supporting Medicare cuts when the military is bloated and out of control and the rich pay too little in taxes. It's insane and sickening.

5. I was annoyed with what Lawrence said because
even IF the liberals cut medicare, they got, according to Lawrence, "the largest tax increase ever" (or a tax increase, nonetheless). So, in 1993, Repigs were willing to COMPROMISE! Now, we have the extension of the Bush tax cuts, a republican healthcare plan, two unpaid wars, corporate and wealthy loopholes while education, seniors and the middle class are expected to pony up THEIR money again to fix this mess.

And no, I never worked in politics, but it seems self-fucking-evident to me that something stinks in Denmark.

7. Interesting about the O'Donnell/Moynihan Stuff
Edited on Sat Jul-16-11 08:58 PM by chill_wind
Dean Baker wrote recently about his experiences with the Clinton deficit hawks regarding SS Cola cuts and it's true Moynihan was ALL in favor of "fixing social security" with cuts.

To Fix Social Security

By Henry Aaron

opinion
James K. Glassman compliments Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan for courage in proposing to cut payroll taxes and slash Social Security benefits by nearly 30 percent. "A gutsy proposal," Glassman writes. Really? Let's take a look.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/security/stories/oss040898.htm

O'Donnell:

From 1989 to 1995, he was a key legislative aide to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.<3> From 1989 to 1991, he served as senior advisor to Moynihan. From 1992 to 1993, he was staff director of the United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, then chaired by Senator Moynihan. And then from 1993 to 1995, he was staff director of the United States Senate Committee on Finance, once again under Senator Moynihan’s chairmanship. He thus led the staff of the Senate's tax-writing committee during the consideration of President Bill Clinton's first budget, which Congress enacted in the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993.

O'Donnell has moved on in life, but one of Moynihan's other chief allies and strategists lives on here at Third Way:

20. Excellent reminder of how we are told what to think about
and no one mentions that U.S. Life Expectancy is about to Decline - instead we just keep hearing how we are going to live longer so we should raise the eligibility age.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/03/0503231243... - 2005

Researchers also believe the life-shortening effect of obesity could rise so rapidly in the United States -- from two to five years in the next 50 years -- that it may eventually exceed the current life-shortening effects of cancer or ischemic heart disease.

The findings are contrary to what some scientists predict about human life expectancy, which assumes that past increases will continue indefinitely. Most forecasts of life expectancy are based on historical trends, but the authors conclude that such estimates fail to consider the obesity epidemic.

"One of the consequences of our prediction is that Social Security does not appear to be in nearly as bad a shape as we think," Olshansky said.
