On Saturday afternoon, a 19-year old man was shot and killed by police conducting a routine Muni fare inspection in the Bayview.

A little before 5 p.m., two uniformed SFPD officers were checking for tickets on the T-Third line at a station near the intersection of Third Street and Oakdale Avenue. Allegedly, when the officers attempted to detain the 19-year suspect, he fled on foot and was shot multiple times by police. The suspect eventually succumbed to his injuries and died later that night at an area hospital.

Neither of the officers were injured during the incident.

"Information is still preliminary," SFPD Sgt. Michael Andraychak told the Examiner, "but we believe that during the foot pursuit, the suspect fired at the uniformed officers."

However, ABC 7 reports there were some at the scene who disputed the police's official version of events:

Eyewitnesses... ABC7 News they didn't see any shots being fired at the officers.

"I just seen shots going forward," said resident Henry Taylor. " I didn't see shots coming backwards."

1. Man slain by SF police was sought in Seattle death
Edited on Mon Jul-18-11 12:35 AM by RandySF
The man who police officers shot and killed after he fired at them during a foot chase in Bayview-Hunters Point was a 19-year-old Washington state parolee sought for questioning in the slaying last week of a pregnant woman in Seattle, the San Francisco police chief said Sunday.

The man, who was fatally wounded Saturday afternoon while fleeing from officers who had tried to cite him for Muni fare evasion, had recently been released from a prison in Washington after serving time for convictions stemming from a King County sex offense, said Chief Greg Suhr.

Suhr did not release the man's name. But he said Seattle police detectives were seeking him as a person of interest in the slaying Wednesday of Tanaya Gilbert, 19, which also killed her unborn child. Three others were injured. A day after the shooting, gunfire marred a vigil for Gilbert.

I can understand the PO's outrage if I read the Huff Post's piss-poor reporting in isolation. By the way, a gun WAS found.

http://www.ktvu.com/news/28578277/detail.html

"As documented in a cell phone video of the shooting incident posted on YouTube, a witness to the shooting had retrieved the gun and ran off with it. Investigators tracked down the weapon several hours later."

4. That's a lot different than the "Innocent black kid shot by the evil cops for not paying his fare"
story we got in the OP. Proves that yet again, we can't let facts get in the way of good outrage.

13. Yes they have
That tends to happen when, you know, a crime is committed with a gun and the cops are looking for it.

7. This is the kind of cop bashing reactionary bullshit that make me stay away from DU
Edited on Mon Jul-18-11 09:01 AM by Mortos
I work for a metropolitan police department and these types of completely misrepresented stories and videos are posted almost daily. The majority of them are titled with a lie or, at the least, the OP's incredibly slanted bias, or both. And as soon as someone points out the true facts of the story, the comments dry up but there is never a retraction or correction by the OP.

When cops screw up, I acknowledge it. But I will not stand by while this type of slanderous crap is posted. This is the kind of "journalism" FoxNews perfected and it is used against all the boogeymen on DU, including the President. Shame on the OP and shame on anyone who does this kind of one sided, truth be damned, posts.

Why don't you change your headline to "PISTOL WIELDING MURDER SUSPECT WHO KILLED PREGNANT WOMAN IN COLD BLOOD IS SHOT BY RETURN FIRE AFTER POLICE TRY TO LAWFULLY ARREST HIM!!!

From the story mentioned by the previous poster:

The man, who was fatally wounded Saturday afternoon while fleeing from officers who had tried to cite him for Muni fare evasion, had recently been released from a prison in Washington after serving time for convictions stemming from a King County sex offense, said Chief Greg Suhr.

Suhr did not release the man's name. But he said Seattle police detectives were seeking him as a person of interest in the slaying Wednesday of Tanaya Gilbert, 19, which also killed her unborn child. Three others were injured. A day after the shooting, gunfire marred a vigil for Gilbert.

In San Francisco, the man was stopped at 4:44 p.m. by two uniformed officers who, while patrolling Third Street between Oakdale and Palou avenues as part of a violence-reduction effort, conducted a fare inspection on a light rail platform.

The man took off, drew a gun, and ran more than a block into Mendell Plaza as the officers chased him, Suhr said. "He was shooting indiscriminately, more than one time," Suhr said of the man, who apparently fired over his shoulder. "He fired at them, they fired back. That is what officers are going to do. If you fire at the police, they are going to shoot back."

9. Allegedly.
In fact, not even allegedly, he's wanted for questioning, there's no outstanding charge against him for that murder.

Let's see what turns up, before convicting, OR exonerating eh?

11. This is the sort of posting that makes us ALL look bad.
What a bull shit posting. This post is as bad as the fox news shit we have to put up with in this country. Little fact, lots of emotion.

WHY evey post shit like this when it distorts reality and emits any information that might give an explanation for the tragic event? Sad...sad even that DU would allow show snarky posting to remain.

Get your head out of your ass, "July16-20". You make it sound like he was shot because he was black, didn't pay his $2 fare, and was innocent as a new born babe. Reality seems to be he SHOT AT police...he was wanted in quesitoning for murder in Seattle...and he maybe got what he asked for. Good thing no one else was hurt besides the fool party that threatened the life of people "doing their job".

Sad day for DU as well.

19. Calm down dude -
this has been all over the internet all over the world for several days.

It has actually emerged that he DID NOT FIRE a weapon - there are heaps of witnesses. The gun which has was found was filmed by a by bystander,
no one knows whos it is.

The only thing we know is that he was confronted for not paying his fare, fled, and was shot half a dozen times (not once), there are videos showing him lying on the street with absolutely no assistance and bleeding out.

There is absolutely no connection to the murders, none. It is profoundly wrong for the police to be releasing this information as it is clearly aimed at influencing public opinion rather than doing their job.

The fact remains, these police DID NOT KNOW that this guy was wanted for anything - he fled and was shot six times in the back.

Whether you like it or not - citizens should be absolutely appalled when someone is summarily executed in the street - it is wrong on almost every conceivable level - deal with it.

Finally there has been a long and sad history of police corruption throughout the US, they are not the bastion of ethics and good will you would have us believe but are an incredibly troubled institution which is frought with systemic corruption. We are being brought video evidence of a police force completely out of control on a daily basis with nothing being done about it. Therefore it is completely legitimate for people to have initial reactions which conform to the current atmosphere of police corruption and violence.

Your outrage is completely misplaced.

Guess this will give him/her a good teaching moment. The post should really be taken off the home page, if not deleted altogether.

Raped a 13 year old and tried to force her into prostitution. Convicted of armed robbery. Sounds like a real boyscout.
