Progressive radio talk show host Thom Hartmann speaks with a first time caller (Cathleen from El Dorado, Ark.) who adamantly disagrees with his view on the national debt. At 5:00 Cathleen suffers a brain fart, and Thom brings up Jude Wanniski's "Santa Claus theory" about political parties and the debt.

1. What a bumpkin
She seems to think that the fact (assuming we believe her) that she is "a direct decendant of one of the signers" (Which one, by the way?) makes her an authority on the Constitution- when it's clear that most of what she knows about the Constitution (and probably global politics too) she learned from Glenn Beck.

And I'll bet she thinks she won the argument.

3. Talk about bringing a knife to a gun fight.
All that Cathleen could do was parrot the RW talking points she obviously heard on talk radio. Thom was armed with facts and history and made her sound like the dumb hick that she is.

4. How can Thom stand it?
she reminds me of the slack-jawed Georgia apes that call Mike Malloy's show from time to time. But Thom is polite, where Malloy would be delivering a verbal asskicking.

5. HE'S GOT THE FACTS AND SHE'S GOT HER IGNORANCE
But I really wish he'd let her talk a little more. The reason he doesn't, of course, is because it quickly became obvious that she was just going to mouth Republican talking points. Still, it would have been nice if he'd let her talk herself into a corner.

I'm thinking a line of questions like: What was the debt when Jimmy Carter left office versus when Reagan left office? What was the debt when Clinton left office versus when Bush left office? And then, of course, how much of the debt is attributable to Medicare and Social Security? How much to the illegal war in Iraq? To the shady maneuvering by Wall Street that crashed the economy while Bush was in charge of things?

Followed by a couple of quickies that I like: What was the CBO projection for the debt had Carter been reelected and stayed the course of his policies? Compare what it could have been to what Reagan made it. What was the CBO projection for the debt had Clinton's policies -- successful policies -- been continued by Bush rather than the Bush tax cuts? Then, before she could say Clinton's tax policy hurt the economy: Do a quick comparison of the economic situation in the Country when Clinton took office and when he left office. Do the same for Bush.

Want another: how was every war in our Nation's history been paid for before George Bush Junior stole/took office? (Hint: by raising revenue.) How did Bush pay for Afghanistan and Iraq? (Hint, by drastically cutting revenue and asking China to help us out financially.)

6. She's right - there ARE people in this world who don't want America to continue as a republic.
They're called by the truly Orwellian moniker "Republicans".
