1. Poor Cenk...
Never been a big fan, and I totally understand the issue with his abrasive "tone", but I kind of feel for the guy... He's in is a tough biz.

12. I like his tone. That's who he is. The tone is Cenk, authentic Cenk.
My early training was in music. I can very often hear whether a person is being phony or real. It's because I trained my ears. (Don't see well. Never did.)

I can hear now that Cenk is a little disappointed, but free. It's a great sound. A person whose soul is free sounds wonderful.

Frankly, I'm kinda glad to see him leave MSNBC. He was much more ruthless on TYT.

I hope folks like Cenk and Keith can go independent and rip the old networks apart.

87. I agree completely, and am amazed by the hostility expressed...
By a few of the posters in this thread.

Fact is, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Cenk's "tone," unless you happen to object to his holding DC DEmocrats to the same standards we expect him to hold the Repugs to.

My guess is that the naysayers here are motivated, in some cases at least, by a desire (conscious or not) to see MSNBC become a Dem "centrist" equivalent of Faux news.

143. I'm a HUGE FAN. I think his tone is pitch perfect.
I was reading over at HuffPost (why bother, right?) and hated their central Dem voice saying Cenk was 'angry host/seeking revenge'.

I had to ask whether they saw the same video I did. I don't know if my response will be accepted, but I think it works in this discussion too.

"HuffPost's tone is set to defend the establishment. Impressive! Why don't you tell us why Phil Griffin is more credible than Cenk?

At some point, after MSNBC has let Dan Abrams, David Schuster, Keith Olbermann, and now Cenk Uyger go it has to be more than talent, personality, or ego. It has be MSNBC's corporate culture.

In the future, full disclosure of the HUFFPOST's relationship with MSNBC would be nice."

You could to their site but why give them additional traffic?

Fox and the rethugs can get away with anything they want and no one says anything to stop them. Let Keith,Cenk,Shultz,Rachael or Sharpton attack the rethugs like Fox attacks Dems ooooooh thats a "NO NO". Wisconsin is trying to show everyone the way to do it. They have Dems. and rethugs going after Walker and its congress and senate. Make up your mind FIGHT or WIMP OUT...and stop complaining about those that are trying to help.

39. It's not about the republicans...
re: "This is distressing; but, Al Sharpton challenges the republicans just as much as Cenk did"

It's not about an MSNBC personality challenging the Republicans, that's what's expected of them. It's about them challenging the DEMOCRATS( from the left). That's the problem. Cenk is challenging the establishment... that includes the Obama administration.

Washington is happy with Fox Republican cheerleaders and MSNBC Democratic defenders, they see that as safe. The Democrats and Republicans largely want the same thing (something close to the status quo), and are about as different from each other as the two officers who play Good Cop and Bad Cop. Washington is happy as long as you're rooting for one of the cops. If you start saying that both cops are on the take, they want nothing to do with you.

I hate that Republicans are so busy talking over the host or the Democrat that no clarity has been reached on an issue. It is like watching crossfire again.

Sharpton is unbearable. For the most part, I agree with his politics. I just can't handle an hour of him.

MSNBC stands for less and less each day. Their tone and quality of entertainment is less now than it ever was.

73. I agree with you
Since it's come to where the Dems are beholden to the special interests almost as much as the GOP is, there's not much to cheer for. I'd guess "the people in Washington" are worried they're gonna be exposed for the posers they really are. After the president's "you progressives" remark, it's hard to argue that we're being listened to with interest. Then there was Biden's "don't come to me!" admonishment the other day. Wouldn't that give a clue that "we can get along without you - so don't piss us off"???

Cenk, Current is where you belong. They're looking for REAL Dem voices over there.

95. watch part 2
If you watch part 2 of the clip in the OP, Cenk explains why Rachel can probably get away with a bit more criticism of the Dems than he could.

I'd also venture to say that, if he chooses to go that way, Al Sharpton could get away with it too, because so many people already see him as a something of an out-of-the-mainstream extremist, or worse, an "angry black man" -- though it's probably the risk of being so marginalized that will likely prompt Sharpton to be more tempered in his commentary.

Corporate media is the establishment, period. You did the right thing, heroically, congratulations! Keep on fighting the good fight along with all of us good guys, progressives, true democrats, liberals, socialists, greens, whatever. One day we'll look back at these monopoly times as the dark ages of democracy, we will win.

90. "Inferring"? I'm saying flat out that I don't believe him. This is a face saving,
self serving move on the part of Cenk to launch him to his next doomed-to-fail project. I find it hard to believe that the WH knows, or even gives a shit about Cenk. I mean, WTF? I see this for exactly what it is......a last ditch effort to use this administration to elevate his own sad profile. There is no corroborating evidence for Cenk's claims, and that's what I have a problem with.

If Phil Griffin cut him because of pressure from the White House, then Griffin should come out and say that. Otherwise, why would he tell Cenk that? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of his removal? Shouldn't this "grand conspiracy" have been kept silent? And if Griffin told this to Cenk in confidence, then Cenk's an even bigger asshole than I previously thought, because he just stuck the knife between Griffin's shoulder blades & twisted it. Either way, I think it's funny as hell. It has all the hallmarks of a bad Greek tragedy.

109. What an ugly thing to say
I am appalled that you put a "Dem" in your name. Its embarrassing.

I do not watch Cenk religiously, only clips on DU once in awhile when I am interested in the topic. But whenever I do I find him a little brash, but refreshingly honest and someone that verbalizes perfectly a lot of the frustration we progressives are feeling about the Obama administration.

First off why would he say that happened if it wasn't true? Think about it a little. So he'd make something up to purposely burn his bridges with MSNBC when he didn't have to? He can't lie about his ratings, which he showed were blowing away the competition, so what was the reason he left? Offered twice the money for a smaller role. Is it that you cannot fathom how someone would not swallow his/her principles and take the money?

Why would Griffin come out and admit that kind of conversation? That would be totally stupid for him to do.

And why is Cenk an "asshole" for telling us about it? He has no loyalty to MSNBC now. It's an interesting story and confirms what he and many of us suspect about the media culture in Washington. You'd rather not hear it, especially from someone that "looks" like that.

Its a "Greek tragedy" but its also "funny as hell"? Bizarre. You do not make any sense.

And as far as "few progressive voices"? Really? I didn't know. The professionals who get paid to tell you what to think don't impress me much. It's why Air America and so many other ventures have failed. They don't speak to the broader DEMOCRATIC party.

Look, you can worship whomever you choose, but I choose not to kiss Cenk's booty. As far as relationships, I'm surprised he ever got a date, let alone married.

11. Cenk, That's one of the several reasons that I do not
subscribe to cable or watch TV.

It's corrupt. From the "entertainment" to the "news," it's corrupt. It is not real. There is a movie entitled "The Joneses." It shows what TV and advertising in general is about.

TV is about selling products people don't need to people who can't afford them.

We don't need what is going on in D.C. today. We need honest spokespeople like you.

Thanks for all you do.

TV is about selling products people don't need to people who can't afford them.

This sentiment's been around for quite a while:

Joan Blandings: Miss Stellwagon says advertising makes people who can't afford it, buy things they don't want, with money they haven't got.

IMDB: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House

...and it's still true 63 years later!

Cenk represents my views more than any of the other TV hosts at MSNBC or elsewhere, with Dylan Ratigan a close 2nd. I like Ed, Lawrence, and really like Rachel, but they really don't compare to you, Cenk, for cutting through the B.S. and telling it straight -- totally unafraid of the powerful Dems or Repukes.
As long as you make enough money to live fairly decently, hanging onto your soul and remaining yourself are far more important. You made the right decision and won't regret it.
Here's my take on what might have happened. The "big boys" don't mind half-assed criticism, and they even enjoy a chuckle when someone dances around their feet. But they don't like it when they believe their toes have been stepped on. Obama's camp is sweating bullets because the progressive base is abandoning him, and you represent a visible progressive figure and voice who represents anti-establishment -- the establishment that has screwed this country and is intent on inflicting much more damage. You have been getting too close to the truth, which hurts, and were targeted as a scapegoat to try and stop the bleeding, by removing you. Plus, I figured it was only a matter of time before the Comcast boys started flexing their power to get rid of strong voices on MSNBC. These clowns think they can silence the rest of us by picking off a few at the top. I hate to think this, but I wouldn't be surprised if one by one the others start falling off the TV screen if they don't start playing ball and sucking up to the Obamabots and dipshit Republicans.
The "big boys" at all the networks don't want hard-hitting journalism from anybody, anywhere. They want to keep stamping it out, and have all the money (that they stole from taxpayers) and power to do it. Wall Street is in bed with Washington, like Murdoch has been in bed with British authority. I hope folks like yourself and Keith come back to television even stronger with financial backers who can't be threatened, blackmailed or blackballed by the big boys. In the meantime, go Young Turks!

24. This is just sad!
I miss Cenk on TV. Is his show on TV also, somewhere? I'd love to watch him. It's hard to find an intelligent show. Ed makes me want to vomit most of the time. Tweety is abnoxious. Laawrence O'Donnel and Rachel are priceless. Even the new host, Bashir? is very interesting. But the Al Sharpton is a disaster. He knows how to lick from the hand that feeds him...but he is a TERRIBLE host. His talent is NOT in hosting a show. What more needs to be said.

I'm sorry Cenk. You did it all, and you did it well. This is what our country's media has sunk to. Pathetic. They play to the piper. Glad you quit tho, if they were going to try to reduce you to a pawn.

40. that had to be a hard decision for Cenk.
I can sympathize with Cenk having some mixed feelings. He's probably putting on a pretty big positive outlook for us because surely inside he must still be very mixed about what happened.

I'm sure Cenk had dreams of bringing a new style and authenticity of progressive views to mainstream TV/Cable and changing the world.
I'm sure Cenk like any of us could use the money.
He also mentioned the perks were nice too.

But I cant express what a relief it is to see someone STAND UP for progressive ideas. and refuse to be shackled.

I like Al Sharpton too. He's not the enemy here, how silly to compare them. Al!! Go over to Current with Cenk!

As an aside: I wonder if Cenk's pissing off the "Manatee of the Airwaves", Limpbaugh, had anything to do with his dismissal. Interesting.

Cenk stay true to yourself and your listeners, you did the right thing, who wants to be dictated on how to do your own show. MSNBC loss.

53. At 1st, I thought Cenk was a little boring.
But then he got really interesting when he found his voice.

I really missed him when they stuck in Al.

I love his tone, I love TYT and I'm proud he didn't get co-oped by the RepubliCON-lite Democrats.

He has proven beyond all doubt that progressive liberal TV can make money and lots of it.

55. Good going, Cenk.
As said in "Inherit the Wind", the job of the press is the comfort the afflicted and afflict the comforted."

Not anymore. Now they are the comforted and only comfort the afflicted if it will grab ratings as a sob story.

I wish we had a real liberal network that would truly challenge authority.

71. Would like Cenk to make an announcement on Keith's show
I wonder how flexible the programing is at Current Tv, Keith is definitely interested, this is right up his ally. Keith can't carry the whole load.
I'm surprised they don't go after Ratigan, he's a real bomb thrower at the status quo. Ed goes after O as well but is more of a labor advocate.
Chris is wasting his talent on speculation on who is up and who is down. He should use his considerable talent to educate viewers on issues, his last two minutes are the ones worth watching. Cenk was a great addition to Msnbc, could be a better fit at
Current TV.

69. It seems like to succeed at M$NBComca$t one must remain on the defensive. The moment the hosts push

their momentum to the offensive is when they get canned.

Some of the hosts can play that game well for a while like Keith and Rachel. But just as Keith's were, Rachel's days there are numbered. If she were ever to go on the attack with a Rethug guest she'd ba canned.

Eventually MSNBC will be populated exclusively by "centrist" Rethugs like Joey Scabs and DLC eunuchs like Lawrence O' Donnell. As eager as he seems to please the White House and its corporate benefactors like GE (who owns the other half of MSNBC), I don't even think Sharpton will last. I give him 2 months, tops.

Tell the operator you want to leave a comment and you'll get transferred to the right department for that. Don't yell at the operators, by the way, they don't have anything to do with it.

122. Cenk Uygur To Go On Keith Olbermann’s Show
Cenk Uygur, who got his show on MSNBC because of the departure of Keith Olbermann, then proceeded to burn more than a few bridges on his way out, is about to burn the last one — and there isn’t a boat big enough to get back across — as he goes on “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” on CurrentTV tonight.

someone once said that in bureaucracies, you are penalized for telling the truth, not for telling a lie.

Something tells me that what Cenk has recounted here is largely true. In the bureaucracies I worked in, this has been depressingly the case...

all the good real news are on indie channels. Current has Keith, Cenk has... hey current put Cenk on. Which we could get Current.

never forget Fox Owns part of NBC or whatever. so MSNBCFOX still rings true, and without Rachel that show is Fox. Well frankly it's Fox part 2. Fox 1 has Shepherd Smith, Fox 2 has Rachel Maddow. go figure.

MSNBC is going to dogs anyway, bringing on Michael Steele to water down any liberal message. They kicked Phil Donahue off with very good numbers and tried to replace him with Michael Savage. Have to spew the corporate line, no such thing as speaking truth to power.

169. Kicking for Cenk
Unbelievable story. They said the things to him that usually are silently understood, such as you need to play ball, you're too critical of the political establishment, put more Republicans on your show, etc. I hope Media Matters or FAIR take up this story, it's the rare case where the invisible hand becomes visible.

And a huge shout-out to Cenk for turning down their offer of a different role. It would have been tempting. He's one of a only a few reporters who won't be told how to frame the news. They tend to lose their MSM jobs if they're too principled.
