Does Norway make prison inmates too comfortable with nice furniture, flat screen televisions, rock climbing walls, a recording studio and more? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss.

The photos were from the Time.com slideshow "Inside the World's Most Humane Prison."

2. The idea is rehabilitation, not punishment.
No wonder their crime rate is so mush lower there.
All we do is use the experienced, hard core criminal to teach the amateur criminal how it is done, then recycle them.
Punishment verses rehabilitation.

3. 'Humane prisons'. Americans cannot even imagine that.
Yet we preach to the rest of the world about 'human rights' while our prisons are torture chambers filled with violence.

We SHOULD be ashamed, but now it's just accepted mostly.

Good for Norway for not living in fear of doing what is right.

4. I wasn't happy with how TYT covered this story.
I sent some info on recidivism and crime rates in Norway compared to the U.S. along with some other points to Cenk and Ana. Follow-up discussion will take place on the show tonight.

6. Life must be pretty damn good in Norway...
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 09:07 PM by teknomanzer
I believe that most people when given a life filled with opportunities will choose to live productive lives as law abiding tax paying citizens. A prison system like this indicates to me that most people in Norway have the opportunity to work and be productive members of society and choose to do so. The facts support this. The poverty rate in Norway is about 4% compared to the United States which is about 14% and climbing. The incarceration level in Norway is about 71 persons per 100,000. The USA has the number one rate of incarceration at 743 per 100,000. So much for the land of the free. The recidivism rate is 20% in Norway while the United States is 53%. 80% of prisoners in Norway find that life on the outside is way more awesome than this luxury prison and choose not to go back. Must be fairly easy for an ex-con to find a job in Norway. I will bet that there is a much lower level of income disparity in Norway compared to the USA, but I will leave that for someone else to look up.

Words to TYT: Don't hate on Norway's prisons. Focus that hate on our fucked up society and its corrupt leadership.

I can post it if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

14. For low-level drug offenders this prison may be appropriate
Edited on Fri Jul-29-11 12:35 PM by alp227
but for mass murderers like A. Brevik this won't do.

10. Actually
And I speak from experience. As one that spends an afternoon per week in the juv max security system. I'm the fun guy. They learn fly tying and casting. BTW...they need more shit like what I do, stead of the bible thumpers....I get to see the volunteer sign-in sheets....<Destination: Chapel> takes up just about all the lines between my visits. These BAC pukes show up twice then who the fuck knows what

There are four categories in the big house
One: These are brain damaged, and really fucked up. They should never be out on the streets. They can be normal one second, and violent 2 heartbeats later. We need a system like work farms for these lost souls. They just ain't gonna make it on their own. I took a pair of eyebrow scissors bone deep in the bicep from one of these kids. 15 seconds later he didn't have a clue what had happened. <Compared to trying to stop a table saw with my thumb (twice), and running a chainsaw half way through me foot, it was but a flesh wound>....What he did wasn't personel. I got him out off "restricted" so he could be in the class the next week. That was maybe a year ago. Two weeks ago he almost got me again...He hit 20 a couple days ago, and got tranfered. He's one of the few I know what they are in for...Killed his mom and sister

Two: These are decent kids, but when they run with the wrong crowd they fuck up. IMHO these kids need to be ass whipped real hard and at the time they fuck up. Whacked hard enough they never want to get whipped again. BTW most of the kids I've had that fit this category are from middle class to upscale households. I wood see no problem if the parents got their asses blistered also. They need to WTFU

Three: These are the ones that fall through the cracks. They are hungry at ages 2,3,4,5,6...12 and finally try to score enough in one hit to feed themselves for a year but get caught. These are the kids whose parents should be neutered. With guidance and an education, these kids will figure it out. Actually they have, but few realize that yet.

The forth and final are the drug addicted....there I don't have a solution
YMMV

Kill someone and spend 21 years max in a place with a gym and a flat screen TV.

Come on, this is a low security facility.

And cenk.. "I understand they're pretty socialist, but.." Great political analysis.

And no, Breivik will NOT live the high life in a place like this.
From what i understand, criminal gangs in Oslo have put a bounty on his head.

12. Rehab humans
It seems like the humane way to act. I think punishment makes people resentful and revenge seeking. My Chek friend was in prison for protest singing during the 80's. His description of their prison system focused on job skills to create success after release. I was surprised.

13. It's the "least harm" system in operation
Edited on Fri Jul-29-11 02:02 AM by saras
They don't actually make all these decisions about how to treat prisoners primarily from the point of view of what's "best" for the prisoners. They make the decisions based on what's "best" for the whole society, and if it's maybe not the ideal system for prisoners, that's a relatively small cost to pay for the net gain for everyone else.

Kind of obvious, in a way. I mean, would you rather that a kid who gets involved in an armed robbery come out of prison a decade later as an educated, trained, up-to-date member of society, or as a committed violent criminal with a deep hatred for society and profound sexual, consent, and communication issues? (edit: and note that your answer to this question has little to do with what you think the kid "deserves" for what they did.)
