1. It was -- but will the poor in America do anything about it?

10. Thank you. Jobless recovery and tax cuts for the rich put the
poor in a no win situation.. Throw in the fact that public transportation is real bad in poorer neighborhoods, and they have another struggle to deal with... I would love to see the Rubert Murdochs with their no bid contracts have to find work and stay afloat like we expect the poor to do...

26. Looks like the poor around London, UK, have just started to do
anything about it... which is what always happen when a minority of totally corrupt ruleR$ make absolutely clear they don't give a flying damn about them, by:

- always exploiting them more and more
- always reduce their wages and working conditions
- always destroy the environment more and more
- always pass legislature than obscenely favor their mega-rich donors
- always cheat to destroy workers unions and benefits they deserve for their hard work
- always (do I need to add more, since there are still a lot more reasons?)

17. So, Helping Out the Poor
What'd that be, sacrificing a couple of smart-bombs per city, for a couple of smart-programs.

I keep wondering if it'll ever get to the place England is right now. I hope not, as I live in a poor neighborhood.

I keep saying they should be passing out birth control like free candy at Halloween, but instead the religious maniacs are trying to get as many willing little wage-slaves created as possible, so they can crap all over their dreams at some future point.

3. More and more talk of this being an undeclared Civil War of
the Haves against the Have-nots.

I have to agree.

I think the financial markets are scaring Obama purposely---as if he needs
to be any more pliable in their hands.

A position to do anything about it.

One fourth of the children in this nation are impoverished - just what the F___ do you expect them to do about it?

Many are older individuals with serious health problems.

Many are younger adults with serious health problems.

This is HUMANICIDE on a major level - right up there with the Holocaust Genocide.

But since most of these people are not Jewish, and/or not of any other particular minority or ethnic group, I guess it doesn't matter.

At least not as long as those bringing down the harm, the malnourishment and the lack of basic medical necessities don't have swastikas on the garments that they wear.

That lady was creepy talking about people thinking the poor are leeches. Saying that Well, he's president of ALL the people, well yes then, dear sociopath, that means he's president of the poor too!

7. how can you blame the poor when they can't come up with
the $5000/plate to attend the fundraiser where they can actually talk to the president?

How can you blame the poor when they made no decisions with regards to the taxes being cut on the wealthiest, starting two wars that can't be paid for, prescription drug programs that weren't paid for and the abomination that was the banking fiasco?

They're to be blamed for living? For breathing? This country says "no" to planned parenthood and birth control and right to choice, well guess what? That produces mouths that still need to be fed. People aren't going to stop fucking--human history has born that out for millenia.

There are children, who were once babies in their mother's bellies, who have "a right to life" since their mothers had no right to choice. What about that? This country wants to call itself a "christian, god-fearing nation" while at the same time, snatching food out of the mouths of hungry children and sending jobs across the sea and their parents can't find work.

If this government wants to consider itself a "god-fearing nation", then that shit costs money and programs need to be put in place so that people have safety nets. Either that or make everything free and then we won't have to worry about it.

Exposing lies from corporate media, rightwing think tanks, and others about the poor in America. We need a revolution to equalize this society, no more people 500 times richer than you. Agree????

15. Why is it so difficult for some people to treat other people with care and compassion?
This is the USA slowly turning into a country of gluttons bound and determined not to share with the the vast majority who are on survival modus.

Stay off the streets!! It could get ugly.

18. The poor don't have lobbyists
About 3.5 million US residents including 1.35 million children, are said to be homeless. Homeless vets are on the rise as well. About 45%. Anyone who would attack them should have to walk in their shoes and spend some time in a soup kitchen. These are not people who play the stock market. This is not the America I grew up in.

The number of working poor in the United States increased slightly between 2006 and 2008. The working poor are individuals who were in the labor force for at least 27 weeks during the year, but still had incomes below the official poverty level. About 8.9 million people fit that definition in 2008, a spike up from 7.5 million in 2007 and 7.4 million in 2006. The working poor accounted for 6.0 percent of all people who were in the labor force 27 weeks or more in 2008. http://www.qualityinfo.org/olmisj/ArticleReader?itemid=00006785

23. You bring up a point that is often ignored. The working poor - most
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 11:27 AM by jwirr
welfare programs have required the poor to find work for many years now and most of them have - all those low paying jobs no one else wants to do. Those who are not working are of the disabled (although many of them also have low paying jobs), the children and elderly. Either group does not deserve the abuse that the host gave them. I do not understand this nation anymore. But then maybe I do - we are all afraid so we need to believe that there is an easy solution - thus the most helpless group becomes the target. They are in denial - they are only one step away from poverty themselves.

28. yes
and the republicans framing it the way they do is beyond the pale. Making them the target for the economy crisis, or they need to pay more taxes. It was stunning during the health reform debate to see a retired professor with Parkinson's being treated the way he was. I don't think I've ever felt more ashamed of americans. In was and is inexcusable.

I always thought of America as my extended family, but now it's such a dog eat dog mentality and it may come from fear of what the future might bring, but what I hear mostly is scorn for anyone who falls through the cracks. At least from the right anyway. Perpetuating hopelessness is not only immoral but inhumane. But I'm rambling. Thank you for your input :)

heartless, tone deaf to the problems this country, and especially the POOR are facing.

Kudos to Tavis Smiley and Dr. West for taking on this project.
