japan has always suffered severe earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons by the number and land slides all year round. (japan doesn't name their typhoons btw and this was #12 and #13 is moving in on hokkaido now) the main island of honshu alone sits on three major tectonic plates ...
disaster movies with nuclear waste creating monsters that rise from the sea or dormant volcanoes has long been a major film genre ...
