2. The primary charter of the EPA is the prevention of unreasonable risk for man and the environment
But they have not done so. So the environment and the people have become part of an experiment. There is therefore no regulation.

That was my paraphrase of what the man was saying. And it's important not just with respect to the EPA.

29. The dirty little secret over at EPA is that it has, from its earliest times, colluded
Edited on Wed Sep-14-11 03:00 PM by truedelphi
With Big Industry.

One of its younger scientists found out in the late seventies/early eighties that the lead in gas and in paints was impacting the nervous systems of people.

What was the EPA's response? They decided to "pink slip" this scientist.

Unfortunately for their plans, but fortunately for the public, the MacArthur Foundation gave this scientist a huge award for his work on lead. And much publicity.

And so, the EPA did not go forward with their plan to oust the individual, as that would have made them look bad.

So we have one of the more stunning achievements of the EPA, that is, the banning of lead from products used in cars and in homes, not really the achievement of the EPA at all, but an achievement brought about by the MacArthur Foundation.

33. Not unlike other government agencies.
Like Fish and Game. I had my eyes opened about ten years ago with an experience that shocked me. Fish and Game was acting as police for the private logging firms.

Money. Resources. It all comes back to the demand. We've got ourselves in a real corner now. We're trying to engineer our way out of it, but the rest of the world is growing.

Crazy times. And yet age old kinds of behavior. I'm grateful for this forum, and the internet. A powerful tool for the vigilant.

4. Get rid of the 'TRADE SECRET' voting machines, then government will start behaving as it should
to protect us and the environment.

The problem with 'TRADE SECRET' vote counting is similar to the problem of corporate lobbyists writing our laws and government agencies being run to benefit the corporate powers, but it is much worse, in that it prevents us from electing leaders who serve the public interest on ALL issues and it permits ONE, PRIVATE, FAR RIGHTWING-CONNECTED CORPORATION--ES&S, which bought out Diebold and now controls 80% of the voting systems in the U.S.--to (s)elect utter scumbags for congress, governorships, state legislatures, and, yes, in the case of Bush Jr., the president.

This private corporate vote counting system is now complete, in every state--a total corporate lockdown of the vote counting--and, although it wasn't compete in 2004, it was one of two methods used to keep Bush-Cheney in power for 4 more years of war and mayhem, the other being purges and suppression of black voters. The system is now complete and there is NO vote count in the U.S. that is adequately verified on an automatic basis. Half the states do NO AUDIT AT ALL (comparison of ballots to machine totals). The other half do a miserably inadequate 1% audit. (99% of the actual votes are never seen by human eyes or counted by human hands.*).

This is OUTRAGEOUS!

As for Obama, this system allows the far rightwing to keep him in check, both with a scumbag congress and the threat of being dis-elected, should he cross the corporate powers and war profiteers too seriously. It also allows the far rightwing powers-that-be to shave his mandate (which I believe they did in 2008, by possibly as much as 10%)--another check on his power. The corporate 'news' monopolies began writing the narrative of his defeat in 2012 mere weeks after he was elected and will enlarge and enhance that narrative if he is slated for defeat. Hard to know what these corporate powers will do with their new direct control of the vote counting, but the point is that they can do WHATEVER THEY WANT TO. I believe that Obama was elected but he was also PERMITTED to be elected--probably to erase our memory of Bush/Cheney and their many crimes--and that IS the problem, that the vote is not being verified, and, in half the states, cannot be verified.

Lack of transparent vote counting--vote counting that everyone can see and understand--is not the only thing wrong with our system. But it is the biggest and most definitive blockade to reform that I have ever seen in an alleged democratic system. And I believe that it was intended to be just that--the final blockade to reform, most especially as to our war machine, but also--added on to that--to go forward with the contrived financial crisis that busted our government, to insure that the rich prospered while government services and regulation were destroyed. The bill that the Anthrax Congress passed, to spread these diabolical election theft machines all over the U.S., was passed in the SAME MONTH as the "Iraq War Resolution" and I believe was intended to prevent the American majority--which opposed that war by nearly 60%--from holding Bush-Cheney accountable for it and from insisting that it be stopped. 'TRADE SECRET' vote counting proved very effective on the matter of war and war budgets and is now being used for the latter purpose--for the rich to take everything while government is deconstructed.

The rightwing is talking about ENDING the EPA. ENDING it! And they have an illegitimate, rigged platform from which to do so--given them by ES&S and the corporate 'news' monopolies. This greatly constricts what any Democrat can do and it threatens environmental armageddon, should ES&S and its corporate pals decide to go all out next year and install Bush Junta II.

-----------

*(By comparison, Venezuela has electronic voting, but it is an OPEN SOURCE code system--anyone may review the code by which the votes are tabulated--and they do a whopping 55% audit--more than five times the minimum needed to detect fraud in an electronic voting system. We, on the other other hand, use 'TRADE SECRET' code--code that the public is forbidden by law to review--and do NO audit or only a 1% audit. Believe me, this is why Venezuelans now have free universal health care and we don't. They have worse corporate media than we do but are nevertheless able to elect leaders who serve the public interest and are beholden to the public for their actions.)

23. With only 32% of the electorate dyed in the wool Democrats
And a mere 24% as Republicans, that leaves over 40% of people wanting something different.

Seventy percent of us want the wars ended. Doesn't seem to happen under either party.

The Rule of the Rich, have their hold over the agencies which were originally supposed to look out for us, but now those bodies that simply rubber stamp as "healthy" any product that the Big Corporations have to sell, that needs to change.

Without the help of the media, also under the boot jack of the Big Corporations, it will be a long, hard and perhaps even bloody struggle.

13. Stunning
how few of us GET what is happening to the honeybee population. "Chronic toxic risk" is clearly the equivalent of an imminent mass extinction event. The beekeepers I know are now saying they call it a 'good year' if they're able to save a third of their hives. In fact, the number of bee hives that succumb to 'colony collapse disorder' (the officious and mendacious description of what clothianidin does to bees) is increasing every year.

Honeybees are our ecosystem's primary pollinators. Without them, the vaunted 'breadbasket' of the United States will cease to exist. Tell me: how do you think we'll feed the hundreds of millions of us--much less the hundreds of millions of humans in other countries that the United States routinely feeds--if we kill all of our bees?

All for the acquisition of obscene amounts of wealth...

18. The most important thing in the world is not to sustain the world. It's to make rich people richer.
Edited on Wed Sep-14-11 10:46 AM by valerief
Everything is driven from that. Nothing else matters.

That's what I've learned from the world's absurdities.

Now, why do rich people need to get richer? Because they're friggin' INSANE!

While the Tea Bags are bashing the EPA, what are the Democrats doing? NOT A FOOKING THING...

when they should be out saying the EPA actually needs to do it's job.

Obama should go after this very thing...the Tea Party is getting a lot of traction bashing the EPA and the other side needs to be heard.

At some point these CEOs have to realize they are not only selling public the rope to hang themselves, but the CEOs own ability to survive on the planet is in jeopardy as well. These folks are out to kill everyone whether they realize it or not.

They are acting totally irresponsibly.

30. I'm guessing that Monsatan is busy developing a chemical that pollinates plants
simply by spraying it on and letting the air disperse it. Or some such shit.

Otherwise, how can human beings who are smart enough to be scientists or to run a major corporation, fail to see that they are undermining the pollination of the food supplies upon which we live.

Greed. Ignorance. Take your pick.
