...The situation began Aug. 17 when more than 200 foreign college students who had temporary jobs packaging Hershey candy for the summer protested their working conditions. After conducting a sit-in that halted production at warehouse in North Londonderry Township, they protested on Chocolate Avenue in front of The Hershey Story museum.
The students, who paid between $3,000 and $6,000 to come to the United States for the opportunity to immerse themselves in American culture by working in a job for three months, claimed their jobs barely covered their rent and left little money or time to enjoy the American experience.
The U.S. State Department is investigating the students' allegations against the sponsoring organization - the Council for Educational Travel USA. The department has not yet released its findings.
Three other federal agencies also have launched investigations into the students' complaints.
According to the NGA, nearly 70,000 Americans signed a petition in support of the students' demands:
1) to refund the money the students paid to come here; and
2) to turn the 400 jobs they filled in the packing plant - operated not by Hershey but by a contractor - into living-wage jobs for local workers.
