Views on DU: 1778 | 'L Word' Actress Leisha Hailey was kicked off a Southwest flight because she was kissing her girlfriend. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss this controversy. What is the proper way to handle PDA situations?

1. Southwest said they were kicked off for using PROFANITY, not for kissing. |
|
I have no axe to grind here, I simply read it in the paper today. http://www.smh.com.au/travel/travel-news/swearing-not-kissing-got-lesbian-actress-kicked-off-flight-20110928-1kw5q.htmlMore at this link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/27/leisha-hailey-kicked-off-_n_983614.html
Southwest Airlines Co. responded on its website with a four-sentence response.
"Initial reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive. Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all Customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender," it said.
A discussion followed on the flight, and the airline said it "escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground."
The actress and her unidentified girlfriend were on a flight from Baltimore to St. Louis. The kissing occurred in the air and a discussion followed when the plane landed, but details of how the couple was escorted off the flight were not included in the Southwest statement.
Hailey said the encounter between the couple and a flight attendant was recorded. It's not immediately clear who made it.

2. doesn't sound like anyone disagrees |
|
From the first link...
Hailey and Grey acknowledged that they became upset after the flight attendant reprimanded them and told them Southwest is a family airline.
"We take full responsibility for getting verbally upset with the flight attendant," their statement said. "No matter how quietly homophobia is whispered, it doesn't make it any less loud."
Sounds like the only disagreement is whether or not the lesbian PDA warranted the reprimand in the first place.

too prudish, but it is just not polite to do overtly sexual stuff in public. no matter who is doing it. I would be annoyed by it myself although I probably wouldn't complain. It seems as though young people like to flaunt their sexuality, whether heterosexual or homosexual, in public for some reason. Holding hands, a quick kiss, or hug though, I don't think should bother anyone.

7. This is a they say/we say situation |
|
Unless there's actually a video of what they did, whether it be a peck on the lips or full body groping, we'll never know for sure. The airline says it was excessive, the actress says it was just a kiss. Unless you were there to witness it, you have to look at both sides and make your own decision on who you agree with. As for a refund, they were in the air at the time, so unless they were supposed to go on a connecting flight from where they landed, they aren't entitled to one. If they were supposed to, they should get a refund for the portion of the trip they still had to make.

3. So it's not the kissing, it's a matter of self-control. |
|
I don't have an axe to grind either, but the picture this conjures up to me is that the flight attendant and the conservative family were abusive to the women, and when the women reacted, they were the bad ones.
Kind of like John Rocker being a bad guy for swearing at people throwing bottles at his head.
I think the real question has to be - would this have happened if they had been a straight couple? If it's yes, then I'm fine with how they handled it.

10. Seems to be a pattern... |

Billie Joe Armstrong, Kevin Smith, Leisha Hailey, etc. Abuse a passenger and then extend "heartfelt apologies.

11. They didn't really apologize, they just did one of those "regret the misunderstanding" type things, |
