Views on DU: 1866 | The NY Times reported on a secret Obama Administration memo making the legal case that a U.S. citizen could be executed without a trial in some cases. This was later used on terrorist suspect Anwar al-Awlaki who was killed by a drone strike. The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/09/world/middleeast/secret-us-memo-made-legal-case-to-kill-a-citizen.html?_r=1&hp

1. All excellent points made by Cenk. |
|
Points that used to be made by the left when Bush was president. But who needs evidence these days, so long as they are wearing the right team logo?
This is a shameful period in this country's history and few are willing to speak out. I am very grateful to the few who have consistently done so regardless of whose team is responsible for these horrific violations of the rule of law, and of the oaths these elected officials took to defend the US Constitution.

It appears that, in practice, the rule of law is an illusion that may be partially dispelled or conjured at the whim of the president.

3. Another great episode from Cenk. |
|
Everyone, even right-wing people, ought to be very concerned when we give our government the right to kill its own citizens without due process of law.
I've heard lots of people say, "Oh, it's OK, he was a traitor!"
Really.
Do you really want a president to have the power to declare anyone he wants to be a traitor and then executed for treason on his whim?
Didn't we fight a war against a king who had that kind of power 200+ years ago?
We've moved from not shutting down Guantanamo as promised to now killing US citizens. Boy is that some change we can believe in or what?

Evil occurs when good men are silent.
Let's assume that Awlawki was horribly evil. Killing him without due process is even more evil.
