1. Yeah but he was still a dick to the protesters.
He dismissed Beck's ravings as paranoid and delusional but he certainly didn't represent OWS as anything other than a bunch of confused hippies who leave trash everywhere. Fuck Gerry.

I love how OReilly kept fishing for the answer he wanted.

3. I think Beck seemed to imply that Van Jones is the "antichrist"
I want to know if Beck really believes all the crazy stuff that he spouts. I tend to think it's all a show for the suckers that send him money, and that he mocks them every day when he cashes his checks. What say you? :)

5. Strategy from day 1
I didn't see the Beck piece, but I listen to him almost every day in my car. That really is the approach that the republican machine has implemented from Day 1 and it works very effectively. The right has pulled out all of the stops. Obama, Van Jones, etc are all portrayed with the most extreme terms that can be thought of. "He is the antichrist", "He is going to destroy the world", "He is just like Hitler", "He is a Marxist, Socialist, Communist, Fascist, istist, etc". They use namecalling in the complete absence of facts. Remember, this is a group where 40% of them freely admit that Race is a factor in their decisions on who they vote for. This is a group where you can watch video after video of misspelled signs. When you have a group this ignorant, you can not use facts, you have to dumb it down to namecalling. And it works like a charm.

I remember a conversation with somebody a while back who stated very matter of factly that Obama is the antichrist because he is attractive and charismatic. As the Anti-Christ, he is going to destroy the world. With people like this, there is no appealing to anything even near a logical argument.

6. Rivera is CORRECT insofar as if the protests don't become a real POLITICAL movement, it is doomed.

11. Political how? join one of the co-opted parties?
yes, the movement should elect leaders to speak for them,. as having individual voices is just too difficult to do a proper character-assassination of the leaders.

17. Occupy the voting booth and YES, elect DEMOCRATS, if you want ANY chance for change. Or beat drums,
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 11:24 AM by RBInMaine
march and screech, and accomplish NOTHING. As for thinking a new nice pure political party will emerge that can have NATIONAL appeal, think again. The Greens are a joke, and Nader type ideas are also a joke. This is a large and DIVERSE nation. Better to align with the party that damn well IS much better than the RePUKES on balance, influence their message, and work to BEAT the TeaPukes. Don't stand there and tell me there is no difference. If there was no difference, virtually all Senate Dems would not have just supported the jobs bill while ALL RePukes voted against it. You're fuckin-A right there are differences. BIG differences. I agree that not all Dems' hands are clean, but it is utter hyperbole to insist there is no difference. I could spend all day listing the laws we have thanks to DEMS and NO THANKS to the RePUKES.

19. This is not being done to benefit Democrats
Whatever gives you that idea? These protests are being held as a wake up call to both parties. New Laws? Like that crappy credit card "reform" or wall street "reform" laws? Yeah, right. People are waking up, they are fed up. That's what you are seeing, not a rally for any particular party.

What comes of this movement, remains to be seen. Weeks ago, it was said.."it would never last" Well it has and it is spreading globally. What actions politicians take will also be seen, will they listen or will be it be the "We support OWS, but back to the same old crapola"

And while you sit comfortably at home, spouting off what they should do, hoping they will back the candidates you work for...you are suffering no hardship, yet you expect us to do your work for you..."get them into the voting booths to vote for democrats".

We had 2 years of a Democratic majority, that continued to give tax cuts to the rich. No one in the middle class has benefited. Things are getting harder, not easier. People are losing jobs, their homes, their dignity.

And yes voters are always promised the moon. Then there are 99,000 reasons politicians come up with why they can't honor their promises. It's getting old.

What would be ideal, is to get the big money out of politics. Maybe politicians will listen and act on that, maybe they won't. But that's what is needed. Maybe this administration will really go after big banks, instead of trying to stop state attorneys who want to do that. Banks being allowed to still make money, and absolving themselves of any liability.

Instead of wondering what OWS is going to do, one thing they have already accomplished, is making people aware of how they are being screwed over and the outlet to express their anger and let politicians know how they feel...because for a very long time the voice of the people has been ignored.

Now, I'd like to know what politicians are going to do. The status quo isn't going to cut it anymore.

20. that's the thing with cultists or cogs in a machine
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 01:56 PM by MisterP
they've subsumed, dissolved themselves
their only solution is "vote for the party" and their only goal is "votes for the party"
to them, it's no contradiction when their beloved candidate promises omnipotence and Heaven on Earth before the election and then pushes and passes extremely reactionary laws (because it's the candidate doing it, they can rationalize it as good--or the best they could do, or better than the alternative): their goals are electoral, not policy--liberal stuff can only get passed by a Dem, and if they don't deliver, that's okay too

8. "I'm not saying Beck is right I am saying he has a compelling point"
this was prefaced by "I base all my analysis on fact...". So O'Reilly says "fact" and then goes to someone else's OPINION - this is all Fox News is, Opinion as news.
