Buchanan's latest book is Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?

The two begin with a mutually agreeing conversation about free trade but debate Third World immigration and its effect on American public education based on Buchanan's statement in his column "":

For though the majority of immigrants come to work, and work hard, most now come from Third World countries and do not bring the academic or professional skills of European-Americans.

Third, the decline in academic test scores is likely to continue, as more of the children taking those tests will be black and Hispanic. Though we have spent trillions over four decades, we have failed to close the racial gap in education.

Then Hartmann brings up how America confronted Irish immigrants in the 19th century given how Buchanan is Irish-American.

1. I can't for the life of me figure out why Thom would allow....

...this racist POS a nano-second of air time. Just recently he made another racist remark (I believe on MSNBC) just as he has in the past. Even a two-year old could figure out this gas bag of the 30's will spew sewer gas every time he opens his mouth. My gawd Thom, what were you thinking putting this goon on your show? The world already knows he has a racist mouth. Why waste good intellectual mind power or oxygen on this walking sewer? :wtf:

2. at least some conservatives like him find common ground with us on free trade

and maybe you might wanna attack MSNBC for still letting this archaic bigot mouth off all day. This is one case where MSNBC has, like Fox News, nearly an infinite tolerance of bigotry. Given Buchanan's mainstream position, SOMEONE needs to challenge his ideas, and that's what Thom does, challenge conservatives and provide a counter to the right-wing poisoning of the political discourse.

3. I live in a very diverse community, and I am with Thom.

I think we need to do something to raise the expectations and the understandings and improve the opportunities of families and children in our communities who belong to ethnic or racial groups who are not performing as well in our schools as other groups. I don't know for sure what we can do, but I want every child in my community to have an opportunity to live a good life and do work that is both challenging and interesting to him or her.

I remember one of the high school science teachers of my oldest daughter who said of children in our community, "If they would only come to class, I could teach them." A lot of the problem is that the family situations and the cultures of some of the children do not value showing up for school every single day.

We need to do a lot more to educate parents about the importance of just making sure that their children make it to class every day.
