That includes Dr.'s, politicians, health care workers, etc. It didn't used to be the only reason for working in your chosen profession. Fortunately, for us there are still a lot of professionals who are not all about money. Admittedly, there are a lot less. That may be because of the "more profit" incentive. Young people see it and think, "hey, I can make millions." They see that there is for most of the wealthy, no incentive to "give back" unless it may increase your profits in the long run. We see a lot of that kind of "donating" especially in the educational field.
I have been lucky. I have had a few Dr.'s tell me, when I was afraid of losing my health insurance, "don't worry, I'll treat you for free." I have never had to take one of them up on that promise, but I know that they would treat me for free because they are not in their profession only for the money. Alternately, I have known Dr.'s who wouldn't give you the time of day, or if they did, they treated you like a POS, if you didn't have money or insurance.
When we had the 74-91% taxes for earnings over a generous amount, we had more people in lucrative positions who were there because it was what they loved or because they could make a difference. There is no incentive for that since the "redistribution of wealth" in the upward direction that has happened in the last 30+ years. Even the weapon makers knew that the more they made the more they paid. that tends to remove incentives for creating armed conflicts. When you have a society that is only incentivized by profit, you have sociopaths in charge.
The R/W'ers love to say, "oh so you (socialists) want to redistribute the wealth." Hey, narcissist it has already been done. Only it was done to the detriment of the majority. It was "redistributed" upwards instead of the way it should have gone. That, IMO, is our big problem. Now, we need to re-redistribute the wealth. The way it was before we allowed Reagan's corporate puppeteers to take over our country.
