Mods: Please do not delete this. This is about a major decision by the US, not some obscure Is/Pal thing.

1. I am rec'ing this because I want people to read it.
I am sickened by the U.S. response. I am very glad that Palestine was admitted into UNESCO.

I am so sick of American politicians having hegemony across our world. It is all for the MIC.

3. Is it unrealistic to hope that the US will develop a mature position vis a vis the Palestinians?

4. Maybe it will be best if the US loses its UNESCO vote.
I say this because UNESCO involves human needs, human rights, peace, and literacy of people. It would be nice if that part of the UN Charter was not a prisoner to politics.

5. REAL journalism!
I'd almost forgotten what journalism is supposed to look like! Goodman, Ennis, and, especially, Lee are brilliant here!

As someone who has had a post that was critical of Israel removed from this site, without explanation -- and, yes, the post was germane to the thread in question -- I echo the OP's plea that this thread shoud not be deleted.

6. Black letter US law
Administration had no choice. Future appropriations will have UNESCO at zero, so the funding may not ever be restored.

12. This is clearer than most, Obama had no choice.
At this point Congress will be dropping all appropriations for UNESCO making not only a change in the law but a change in the budget.

It's also a clear warning for the rest of agencies...if the US will drop UNESCO, arguably the most liked one out there, it they admit the Palestinians, they too will lose US funding.

30. No president could have stoped it. Law was written that way intentionally
Repukes would have been in Federal court in 24 hours had he tried to ignore it.

21. What does this law say exactly?
That it is illegal for the US to fund any organization that has palestinians in it?

Blackmailing whoever and whatever to do "it's" bidding. I expect Lee will now get ambushed and misquoted and drummed out of journalism.

26. Unesco
UNESCO works to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples, based upon respect for commonly shared values. It is through this dialogue that the world can achieve global visions of sustainable development encompassing observance of human rights, mutual respect and the alleviation of poverty, all of which are at the heart of UNESCO’S mission and activities.
The broad goals and concrete objectives of the international community – as set out in the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – underpin all UNESCO’s strategies and activities. Thus UNESCO’s unique competencies in education, the sciences, culture and communication and information contribute towards the realization of those goals.
UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.

27. It's becoming impossible to support the US on this.
The Palestinians are just as deserving of a home as the Israelis.

Now that the Palestinians are finally turning to legitimate, non-violent means to achieve recognition, the United States is standing in the fucking way of progress.

Using MONEY as a club.

It's what happens when normal people begin to wake up and cast off the lies and illusions of an empire run by and for the benefit of psychopaths.
